Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

So people will now travel to Albany or Emeryville to buy soda. I wonder if the Berkeley voters thought that by imposing a high tax they would raise revenue or are they using a tax to direct social behavior?

According to the article, Berkeley is expecting the new tax to generate between $1-2 million in revenue.

And I have this image of the people voting yes on this measure: hand on hip, wagging finger in the air, saying "I don't like the fact that you drink soda, so I'm going to do everything in my power to prevent you from enjoying it."

Plus, soda comes from corporations, and corporations are evil; therefore soda is evil.

That is debatable. Think of all the vending machines and restaurants/fast food franchises in Berkeley. Americans are lazy - no one is burning gas to drive a few extra miles to make up a 20 cent tax on their 20 oz. bottle of pop, and very few will drive the extra miles to buy their 12/24 packs.

This.

I tend to hang out with people who don't need 10 lb of sugar in their mixed drinks.

In all fairness something needs to be done about the obesity crisis. I'm not sure if this is necessarily the best way to handle it but it's better than nothing.

Yah, you just get 50 lbs of sugar in your choice of breakfast.

I do?

(if your point is that other people will just continue to be mostly unhealthy even if they cut out soda then yeah you're probably right)

If Berkeley is expecting $2 million in revenue from the tax, as far as I'm concerned, they're just profiting from it.

Yeah. "Cigarettes are terrible, let's tax them."

"uh, oh, we have an unexpected budget shortfall. What happened to all that revenue from the cigarette tax?"

Why? Because obese people are disgusting to look at?
