The last word on the salute - from an ex President.

@dick_nixon:
The president does not salute, he is saluted. He is not obligated to the return the salute. It was just a politically stupid picture.

They say satire died the day Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. But if there was even a last smidgen of life left in it...

Yeah, like awarding the prize to the Community Organizer in Chief on spec, was a great triumph. As his spiritual advisor says: "God d*mn America." Let me guess, he's one "religious" guy you wouldn't approve of shutting up.

The point is not whether he returns a salute or not. The point is if he's going to return the salute, he should do it right. Personally, it doesn't seem like much of a deal to me except in the context of him sending Americans into harm's way in the Middle East. I think it was just a brain f*rt, and he intended no disrespect.

At the risk of being accused of "bragging," the very first thing you learn in the military is how to salute, whom to salute and when. And you never, ever, have anything in your right hand.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

If people are going to get bent out of shape over some silly thing Reagan started, then I want to get offended at every single person who helps carry a flag horizontally in sports arenas/stadiums (noteably baseball), since doing so is against the US Flag Code.

Apart from the obvious, that a POTUS is a different matter from some kid with a flag at a sporting event, I agree. I remember how impressed I was a few years ago, stuck in traffic on Westheimer in Houston outside of a Marriott hotel. It began to sprinkle. And within what seemed like a few seconds, a couple of guys came outside to take down the flag. Exactly right. If you're going to display the thing, follow the rules. There aren't that many of them. And if it's a burden to follow them, then don't display the flag. I think most violations result from ignorance rather than disrespect. Although the impact is the same. More than once I've suggested that someone standing near me ST*U during the Anthem.

during the anthem.

I'm amazed at the ignorance that some people give a color guard presenting the flag during sporting events. Veterans standing there proudly displaying the colors as sections of morons robotically turn their backs to the color guard to instead face a flag hanging from the rafters/flag pole.

Probably because there isn't always a color guard at sporting events, so turning to face the flag in the rafters or on a pole as a force of habit.

It ain't that hard. You may be to young too remember, but there actually was a time in America when the PA announcer didn't have to instruct people to stand up and shut up during the Anthem. For many years, P. K. Wrigley, owner of the Cubs, refused to play the Anthem except on special occasions, 4th of July, etc. He felt like playing it before every game tended to cheapen it. He only relented during the Vietnam War. I think maybe he had it right. But he also didn't have lights in his ball park so what did he know?

Did someone say "US Flag Code"?

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations.

Sorry, OldPio, but it drives me crazy when I see a US flag patch on a DU hockey uniform. (Don't even try the "patriotic organization" out clause.)

Fine by me if they deep six it. Are we the only ones doing it?

Turns out one of the Fab 5 (Jugdish, Mohammed, Sydney, Clayton & Lonnie) grew up to be a professor at Northern Colorado and thinks Wesleyan's got it right by requiring it's residential fraternities go co-ed. Here's a flash: even with co-ed fraternities, this loser still winds up on the porch eating cookies with Flounder.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

So it's all about firing a shot at DU? You don't really care if anyone else is doing it? Got it.

No, "control what's yours to control", and then go after the rest.

It's kind of like how I can attack anything I deem "hostile and abusive" now that UND has controlled what's its to control. Self-righteousness is kind of fun; I highly recommend. ;) :D
