Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I see where the president's "go to guy" on race, Al Sharpton, is reportedly making suggestions on who should replace Holder. Any truth to the rumor he's touting Algonquin J. Calhoun?

"Your honor, you have heard the prosecution tell you that my client is dishonest. Your honor, it's easy for him to say that because my client is a crook!"

The way I hope that is working is it will be treated like the rest of the public's unsolicited recommendations. Heck, if I sent a letter to the President telling him to pick Cornelius Magillicudy for AG, I could claim that I am advising the President.

Dream on.

"It's not racist, I just like watermelon." -the cartoon's creator

Who thinks watermelon or fried chicken blasts are funny anyway? Plenty of cultural things to poke fun at that are actually funny - and that goes for all races. Wouldn't make it more appropriate or acceptable, but at least it would show some creative thought.

A watermelon blast is just lazy, cliche, predictable and appealing to the lowest common denominator (and of course overtly racist).

Looking at the comic and not reading the whole story (wouldn't load for me), I took the artist to be making a sloppy jab not at the POTUS, but at his detractors who so often are called racist for simply disagreeing with and criticizing him.

If the attempt was to make fun of the lowest common denominator racist, I believe the picture wouldn't include the POTUS and the bottom caption would be different.

Not saying (for sure) that you're wrong and I'm not exactly OUTRAGED by this - I just find it to be incredibly lazy (cliche) and as a designer by profession, the laziness irks me far more than the racism - just desensitized to stupid white folk by now.

The watermelon and spear in Airplane! were funny because watermelon blasts are so played out and stupid. And that was 35 years ago.

It is definitely possible to parody the stupidity of racism using really over the top racist imagery. The Duke humor magazine did it in around 1985 with a cover that had a black guy in an outhouse wearing fluffly slippers and choking a cat. (If you get the joke, you get the joke -- suffice that it's a brutal send-up of southern racism.) Predictably, people totally missed the point and the editor got suspended because POUTRAGE!!!1!!

To make the joke complete, they should have had a space heater in the outhouse. ;) Funny how they ran that cartoon 9 years after the original gaffe though.

brought to you by Mr. "you no play-a the game, you no make-a the rules." a two-fer in ignominy!

I wonder how Mr. Butz pronounced his last name, anyway.
