Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

If the attempt was to make fun of the lowest common denominator racist, I believe the picture wouldn't include the POTUS and the bottom caption would be different.

Not saying (for sure) that you're wrong and I'm not exactly OUTRAGED by this - I just find it to be incredibly lazy (cliche) and as a designer by profession, the laziness irks me far more than the racism - just desensitized to stupid white folk by now.

Plus, the reference to watermelon is not related in any way to the security breach. Why go there?

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I found another site with this story. The cartoonist is quoted in that story as saying that his kids have watermelon flavored toothpaste and that's what inspired his choice, stating that once he heard about the reaction he was getting that he requested his syndicated version change watermelon over to raspberry. So now the backstory to this story is either being altered by the cartoonist, irresponsible journalists, or both. No matter which, the guy is really wishing he spent more time choosing his words better.

How did it get past the editor?

Whatever the intent, the editor is the quality control/public image safeguard.

It's the Herald. I'd bet the editor made a very conscious choice to generate interest and give a dog whistle to the typical Herald reader.

If snotty, superior smugness was only an Olympic event. . .

A sure sign the terrorists have won -- CW is ending Saturday morning cartoons.

They're all gone. :(

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

The watermelon toothpaste and chimpanzee ears were just mere oversights by the editor!

Everybody makes fun of the president's ear size. They're large. They did the same thing for Bush 43, was that also racist?

Practicing your debate skills? Playing devil's advocate?

What? I'm just pointing out that they do these caricatures to presidents. It's nothing new at all. Do an image search of "Bush chimp caricature" and you'll see a ton of them. My favorite is the image capture of Bush mid-speech set next to a chimp with lips set so that it looks almost identical. It's done all the time. People are trying to look for more within that cartoon than there actually is at this point.

Are white people ever called "monkeys" in a derogatory manner?

Yes. Most new European immigrant populations to the US were compared to chimps, monkeys or apes at one point in time or another by the groups that arrived here prior to them. Feel free to research that one 'til the cows come home, though it should only take a couple minutes.

I mean if we just completely ignore the racial history of the US, it's totally the same thing.

Remember, though, that "white" has evolved. In 1900 Italians weren't "white" yet. In 1850 the Irish weren't "white" yet. "White" is, after all, nothing real -- it's a social construct that indicates status and "normalcy." I fully expect that by 2050 Hispanics will be "white." Race is about social control, not biology.
