Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

It's something that should have happened much sooner. The Ferguson PD looks pretty amateurish by responding to this whole situation thinking their fear tactics would calm things down. On Sunday, calls should have been made by Ferguson PD and the Mayor asking for the State Patrol to intervene.

This wasn't a case of "Andy and Barney" trying to run the show in Ferguson. From what I've read, Andy and Barney aren't in charge, it's Otis...

Just spitballing, but how many officers on the Ferguson PD staff served in either Iraq war? Local PD's hire former military because of their experience, where State Police generally have their recruit schools to mold officers.

Could it be that the police in Ferguson were more familiar with military tactics as a response, and thus utilized what they knew and were unable to respond how the State Patrol did?

As for the gear, it was more the actual gear, not the people wearing it. The MO police had severe body armor/etc, whereas the Iraqi soldiers had minimal, given the situation.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

CNN reporter just played the race card, blatantly. "They [people] are so glad that someone who looks like them [is in charge]." What in the actual F? Yeah, that is not good reporting, IMO. I was looking at the leadership change as a change in attitude towards the situation. Silly me.

CNN has abandoned any pretense of straight reporting in these events. There's no question putting a black face and a different agency out there is the right thing to have done. But CNN is pandering all over the place. I suppose it's just a troubling little detail. But we haven't yet heard the other side of this story. It may not be convincing. But there is one. And I'm still not entirely convinced the officer involved shot a young man who was surrendering multiple times. It's possible but not probable, IMO.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Remember when I said it was a terrible idea to listen to anonymous?

Yeah, they got the name wrong again and their twitter account has been suspended. That anyone listens to these people is beyond me. It's a shell of its former self.

Leave the investigations to the grown ups next time.

Of course. And they logically got out their Molotov cocktails to express their "outrage." And threw bricks off of interstate bridges. And set buildings on fire. And looted businesses. And fired weapons. It's all the chief's fault. C'mon, man. You just want to blame whitey. I saw the one guy lugging a couple of tires he'd liberated. He was probably thinking he wouldn't have done that but for the chief.
Calm down sparkles, I'm not just "blaming whitey". I'm saying the Chief antagonized the community with his actions. And people tend to react when antagonized. Should those people be held responsible for said actions? Absolutely. Would those actions have happened if the Chief had taken better course of action? Probably not.

The stressed part of your post also includes the citizens.

Pretty funny to see the difference in coverage between Faux and MSNBC.

Faux is showing looting video on a loop while MSNBC is showing peaceful marching on a loop.

Pathetic on both counts.

I hate the news channels. All of them.

I want the news. It's a sad state when I get my news from the hockey boards, because the users USUALLY filter out the prejudice.

The Ferguson police chief who retired this year was part of a program where police personnel went to Israel for a month to learn how IDF handled terrorism. This wasn't terrorism but it was treated like it was. Give these guys a hammer and every problem looks like a nail.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Honest question...why would a witness in this case need a lawyer?

I would guess in case said witness were called to the stand. General legal advice on how to handle it, language used, etc. Remember the witness in the Trayvon (sp?) case, when she dropped the racial slur? Didn't look good.

Brent is correct. Many years ago I had to testify in a civil lawsuit because I witnessed a woman hitting a kid riding his bike (he died from his injuries). I was 17 at the time and my parents hired an attorney to guide me through the process so that anything I said could not be used to somehow make it should like I should have done something more and thus ended up being sued also.

In case the cops try to accuse him of something, too?

As an attorney who is married to a public defender, I recommend anyone have an attorney while being questioned by police whether or not they're a suspect at the time.

Don't react violently. You'll be listened to more carefully.

The mayor of New York City was on the air yesterday saying something similar: don't resist arrest. Make your case in the proper way at the proper time.

Mayor Bill de Blasio gave his unflinching support Wednesday to a call from the city’s top cop that New Yorkers being placed under arrest should submit to police rather than fight back.

“When a police officer comes to the decision that it’s time to arrest someone, that individual is obligated to submit to arrest,” the mayor said.

“They will then have every opportunity for due process in our court system.”

This is the same mayor who, during the campaign, was bashing the cops over stop - question - frisk. I guess it's a bit different when you are actually in charge....
