Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

It's amazing how quickly the Usual Suspects pivoted from "oppressive government" to "out of control mob" when this story happened. If only there was some factor that could explain it...

Three nights of violent insurrection might be the place to start looking for an explanation.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Wonder if the good congressman from Georgia still thinks Guam will tip over?

You know, for most of us around here (you would be the exception) our knowledge of police matters ranges from comprehensive to total. Ferguson is a smallish department, with only 50 some odd officers (only 3 of whom are black, which raises some questions). Is it reasonable to expect under these circumstances, that they would have "handled" the situation any better? To those in the streets, protestors and thugs alike, Ferguson PD officers are the enemy. Why would anyone think there's anything those officers could do to calm the waters? It could have been much worse. And thank goodness it wasn't.

As I say, when I first arrived in Houston, HPD was a rogue. And I actually voted against a police pay raise. They didn't deserve it. This was an enormous city with large and growing Asian, black, Latino and gay populations. And HPD was policing it like it was Lufkin. So the size of a department isn't necessarily an accurate indicator of how professional it is. Several years ago in New Orleans, a female officer shot and killed her partner who was responding to an armed robbery call. She was the armed robber! And a veteran drug cop was caught on tape vectoring a hit man to the residence of a witness who was going to drop him in the grease. Both of them are on death row.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

What this is, is an example of bad leadership vs good leadership. A lot of this could've been avoided if the Chief of Police there in Ferguson had acted differently. If he come straight out and said "there is an independent investigation that has begun into an officer involved shooting with a fatality. We will not be releasing information until it is concluded. We ask for the public's patience in this matter." Instead, he drew the Thin Blue Line and closed ranks. That is what set this whole thing off. By closing ranks he made it an us against them situation and that's what set off the protests, the rioting, the overkill police response, all of it.

Agreed. The police haven't done the best job in handling the situation. However, rioting and looting were a BAD choice, as well as molotov-cocktail-throwing. And when you get DEATH THREATS towards the cop under investigation, no wonder cops are on edge, and won't release the name.

And as far as protests go, there is a point where it IS "disturbing the peace" which is a crime, albeit a minor one. So when that happens, and the police tell you to disperse, then disperse or face the consequences. The cops yesterday didn't come in with riot-sticks a-swinging. They tried noise/alarms, that didn't work. So out came the tear gas. One protester was shown putting on his own gas mask, so many knew that was a step that the police would make.

The change of police leadership/authority was the right move. Things were only going to get worse.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I'm wondering how ugly things might get in Times Square tonight. Apparently the NYPD didn't get the whole peaceful protest memo going around.

I think you're talking through your hat. The relevant datum here is which agency employed the officer who fired the fatal shots? Anything else is just window dressing.

That's really touching. 'Course, if the thugs in the streets really were worried about their lives they could have always stayed home. But then they wouldn't be Maxine Waters' patriots, participating in the "rebellion."

It's also what the First Amendment looks like. A concept you seem anxious for some people to experience but not so anxious for others. That, of course, is nothing new and is on display here nearly every day.

You want a refill on your popcorn? I still have a few bowls here. ;)

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

CNN reporter just played the race card, blatantly. "They [people] are so glad that someone who looks like them [is in charge]." What in the actual F? Yeah, that is not good reporting, IMO. I was looking at the leadership change as a change in attitude towards the situation. Silly me.

BS. If he hadn't close the ranks and tried to make it seem like a justified shooting right away then that community would've had at least a little bit of trust. Instead, he immediately tried to blame Brown and that community went berserk.

I had said earlier, Minneapolis has had controversial shootings, and the cops have taken the same approach. No riots, though. Some truly peaceful protests, and some "enough of the thugs" protests (by the people of the communities affected). Whatever culture is in Ferguson, that needs to change. Don't react violently. You'll be listened to more carefully.

Of course. And they logically got out their Molotov cocktails to express their "outrage." And threw bricks off of interstate bridges. And set buildings on fire. And looted businesses. And fired weapons. It's all the chief's fault. C'mon, man. You just want to blame whitey. I saw the one guy lugging a couple of tires he'd liberated. He was probably thinking he wouldn't have done that but for the chief.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Honest question...why would a witness in this case need a lawyer?

I would guess in case said witness were called to the stand. General legal advice on how to handle it, language used, etc. Remember the witness in the Trayvon (sp?) case, when she dropped the racial slur? Didn't look good.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Knew it was gonna happen. The outrage over the body armor/gear that the local police have. Blame the Federal Govt on that, not the cities/counties/states. Different budgeting. Plus, depends on when you were in Iraq. WWII gear was much different than WWI gear. 20 years is close enough to 30 years, in that aspect.

It's something that should have happened much sooner. The Ferguson PD looks pretty amateurish by responding to this whole situation thinking their fear tactics would calm things down. On Sunday, calls should have been made by Ferguson PD and the Mayor asking for the State Patrol to intervene.

This wasn't a case of "Andy and Barney" trying to run the show in Ferguson. From what I've read, Andy and Barney aren't in charge, it's Otis...

Just spitballing, but how many officers on the Ferguson PD staff served in either Iraq war? Local PD's hire former military because of their experience, where State Police generally have their recruit schools to mold officers.

Could it be that the police in Ferguson were more familiar with military tactics as a response, and thus utilized what they knew and were unable to respond how the State Patrol did?
