Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

It's a lot less tacky when we drop bombs from the air. Don't even see the hospitals they hit.

Ya know. More classy.

Although, I guess dead is dead.
Unless you're just mostly dead. Big difference.

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Symbolism aside, this just does not seem like a well thought out idea.

Edit: the coverage by MSNBC, FNC and CNN is laughable and idiotic. But meanwhile, Steve from Virginia's twitter account does link to this, which makes me like him, assuming it's him.

This could easily be my town.

I have overheard innumerable conversations like this over the years.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/11/b...india-suicide-inhuman-drug-sales-tactics.html

INDORE, India — Leaving his wife and two young children home on a recent Sunday, a 27-year-old salesman for Abbott Laboratories’ operations in India — in fact, one of the American health care company’s top performers there — rode his motorcycle to a remote railroad track and jumped in front of a train.

In his pocket, a note in blue ink, handwritten in a mix of Hindi and English, said, “I’m going to commit suicide because I can’t meet my company’s sales targets and my company is pressuring me.”

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

I think part of the problem is even judges are realizing how ****ty our prison system is. Obviously I don't think this short sentence will rehabilitate him but I'm not sure a longer one would either and that should be the ultimate goal.

The sentence is a definite slap on the face to the victim though and the judge was right that there's no real winning here.

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

A couple of comments.

First, exactly like in the Stanford case, everyone seems to gloss over the fact that the criminal justice system, the probation and pre-sentence investigation officers who are legally charged with recommending a sentence, recommended no jail time. I don't know why that is, but if limited or no jail time is not the correct sentence for this crime, then we should maybe look there first.

Second, I personally detest victims impact statements. It is part of the way our criminal justice system has gone off track. They probably do the victim more harm than good by making them come in and relive the entire event. Second, if I shoot a homeless guy in the head and kill him, a guy with no job, no friends and no family, should my sentence be lighter than if I shoot a father of five who coaches little league baseball, serves as a deacon at his church and founded a local charitable foundation? No.

Third, the whole "impact" on the perpetrator or how he has already been "punished" by the consequences of his action is only just marginally relevant.

We need to just let judges be judges and let them sentence people for crimes they commit in the best judgment of the judge. And to that end, what is the "correct" sentence for this clown in Colorado? Shall we just kill him? Maybe turn him into a eunuch. Life in prison? You guys think the sentence was wrong, well what should the sentence be, and why?

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

No one glossed over anything. He raped a girl and got a slap on the wrist. We have a right to feel that is pathetic.

I guess if a guy is convicted of rape I want him to serve hard time for at least a few years. Crazy I know. To bad if that screws up his life what he did is reprehensible.

Oh well all thankfully be didn't do drugs he might have had to actually deal with real punishment.

Worse yet, now we've had two high profile rape cases where the criminal gets nothing. Date rape frat boys everywhere are emboldened, and why shouldn't they be? They know exactly how much those women's lives are valued by the system. They have a funny story to tell their peers at Goldman. Haw haw.

And what about all those female teachers who get caught having consensual sex with their male students. They still end up doing jail time. But guy rapes a girl.......................
