Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

No kidding. "Rich rape culture" has something to do with this kid getting arrested in North Korea for theft? But he's a white guy in college, so I suppose that means he's rich and probably raped somebody at some point, right?

Never mind the fact that his family is apparently financially strained. This is a pretty big leap, even for you, Kep.

We'll settle on fellow traveler and call it even.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Hulk Hogan emerges victorious over Gawker to the tune of $115 million.

Welp, been fun knowing you Kotaku, Deadspin, and Jalopnik.

ETA: Jury will reconvene on Monday, possible punitive damages being added. Also, if Gawker wishes to appeal, Florida law requires them to put up to $50 million into escrow pending the outcome of the appeal. Good night.

Gawker and dish€ts like Hamilton Nolan and the rest of the Gawker staff did this to themselves

I, for one, am going to miss the best writer on the net today, Typer Rogoway.

Nothing to stop somebody from setting up essentially the same model (except with a lawyer maybe?) and hiring all the talent. Drew Magary must be saved!

Considering what was barred from the trial the appeal will be interesting.

So far Gawker is doing a good job of ignoring it. After daily posts of "Watch Day x of the Hulk Hogan trial" they've instead post ten of their last twelve or so stories on Trump.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Can you explain (or give a link)?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/hulk-hogan-gets-115m-verdict-876768

A Florida appeals court ordered the unsealing of court records — including text messages between Hogan and Bubba, Bubba's deposition testimony, what the FBI was told during its investigation, and a $5,000 settlement agreement between Hogan and Bubba — but none of that made it into the trial thanks to Florida Circuit Judge Pamela Campbell's pretrial rulings that strongly favored Hogan.

Denton delivered a statement in response to the verdict. "Given key evidence and the most important witness were both improperly withheld from this jury, we all knew the appeals court will need to resolve the case," he said. " I want to thank our lawyers for their outstanding work and am confident that we would have prevailed at trial if we had been allowed to present the full case to the jury. That's why we feel very positive about the appeal that we have already begun preparing, as we expect to win this case ultimately."

I'd sacrifice Magary if it meant Gawker lost their jobs. For the most part they are terrible journalists and worse, self-important, entitled brats. They espouse all of the bad stereotypes of the millenials. Proudly so at times.

I have faith most of the good ones would get rehired. Rogoway would be picked up by someone else. Magary would too. Granted, Magary wouldn't have free reign like he does now. Which would be sad.

But Jezebel and Gawker and their hateful brand of politics and writing can go away.

I'd love Magary over at The Ringer (Bill Simmons' upcoming new website after he left ESPN and they closed Grantland.)

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

I've heard (and briefly scanned links) of many of these sites. Am I wrong in thinking gawker is basically a TMZ site?

Edit: yes, this is a dumb question, most likely.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

It's somewhere above TMZ but below the Daily Kos.

Though some sections are worse than others. Some are a crop above the rest.

Ok, thanks. Added dumb question: Deadspin is pretty solid, though, as far as comparisons to these other sites? Yeah, they have SOME clickbait, but other stories.....

Jalopnik is pretty cool too. Kotaku was okay until they got wrapped up in the Gamergate slapfight. The others I can live without.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Gizmodo is decent. But Foxtrot Alpha was/is the best part of their network.
