Re: Nice Planet © 2009
Listen, I could really care less about things like the Miss USA pageant, but it is just another shining example of how everything has become politicized, and that's what is sickening. I'm not going to provide any links but feel free to look any of this up if you so desire.
So the USA pageant has the question and answer round. These questions, according to the pageant's own rules and regulations, are supposed to be generated randomly, and the person that asks them is also supposed to be picked randomly. However, in the past two years, we've had Perez Hilton asking a question about gay marriage, and now a liberal-leaning hispanic actor asking a question about the AZ immigration law.
In both cases, the contestant gave an honest answer, and in both cases, it wasn't a popular one; wasn't "PC" you could say. On marriage, she said she believes it should be between a man and woman. On the AZ bill, she said she believes in state's rights, but also doesn't want to see racial profiling.
Also in both cases, it can be pretty much proven that their answer cost them the title. In this year's pageant, the young lady who was asked the immigration question was literally crushing the competition, as evidenced by the scores shown during the broadcast, up until the question and answer round. She ended up losing to a gal who actually tripped while walking across the stage, something that you would think would certainly take her out of the running automatically.
So again, I think pageants in general are silly, and serve no purpose. However, there are plenty of people who think otherwise, and that's fine. Its a public spectacle, a tradition in our country, and it is just the latest thing to become politicized, where the winners are now chosen based on how their politics line up. Sad.
