Re: Nice Planet © 2009

The problem is I doubt the school would've done anything if the kid was wearing a Broncos or Giants jersey. They threw a hissy fit because he wore a Colts jersey though.

True dat. Try to imagine if "America's Team," the Dallas Cowboys, had started off with 22 consecutive losing seasons. How often do you suppose they would have sold out Texas Stadium? Yet, in waiting 22 years for that first winning season (not championship, just winning) the Saints regularly sold out Tulane Stadium and then the Stupid Dome. Having lived in both Texas and Louisiana, I'm here to tell you that as crazy as Texans are about football, Louisianans are in a different galaxy. Not that that has much to do with what we've been discussing.

Regardless of what happens in the game, there will be a hellacious party in the Quarter this weekend. Oh baby.

True, Marti Grai is probably going to be pretty toned down this year because they are going to be partied out from this weekend, especially if the Saints win.

No, no it won't.

The Super Bowl will have no affect on Mardi Gras...

I wouldn't bet on that.

I don't think so. Carnival is what a huge chunk of that town lives for, regardless of the Saints. It's a whole different deal.

Super Bowl is the pre-bar to Mardi Gras, no matter what happens. ;)

Exactly. Perfect. If the Saints win tomorrow there will be the grand daddy of all celebrations, flowing from the game right through carnival. The hookers will be investing in gold futures and driving Bentleys.

Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum

D.C. should be cutting all the funding they give those people and take back their tax exempt status. Pronto.

Apparently, "Separation of Church and State" means separation of State from Church, but not Church from State. I wonder why the Catholic Church still thinks it's the middle ages where the Church basically controlled everything. That hasn't been the case for quite a while now.

Iowa mom, 60, accused of pimping daughter

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A 60-year-old Cedar Rapids woman has been accused of arranging her daughter's effort at prostitution.

Mary J. Doolin was arrested Wednesday in connection with a Sept. 29 incident in Coralville. Police say Doolin sent her daughter to meet an undercover officer who had contacted her during a prostitution investigation.

According to police, Doolin's daughter, 37-year-old Debra Voshell, was later charged with pandering.

Police said Doolin admitted to running a prostitution ring for a number of years and has prior convictions for pimping and prostitution.

Doolin was being held today in the Johnson County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

It doesn't. It's trying to avoid being forced against its morals.

As a Catholic, I think they're going about this the wrong way, but I understand why they're upset with that amendment not passing.

Frankly, if that's what the Catholic Church wants to do, it's their right. I don't agree with it, but I can't argue with their beliefs.

This is completely the wrong way and if they want this kind of influence over rules and regulations than they should surrender their tax exemption.

I think their attempt at influence will fall short, and even I think they know that. However, I think that the way it sounds, them playing hardball (on the surface; I think they might cave, depending), I think the appearance of the gub'ment "shutting down a charity" (that's the way a few people would spin it) could affect this whole thing. It's sad, but true. It's come down to who can make the other guy look like a bad guy, right or wrong.

Re: Nice Planet © 2009

The Catholic Church is not a charity though, and the legal basis for giving churches tax exemption status to begin with is shaky.

I know the Church does a lot of good things in DC. But is it just me or is it a wee bit Un-Christian to say, well...we'll stop providing charity if you don't do what we want.

Isn't that defeating the whole concept of charity to demand something in return?

Maybe they shouldn't have been forced to accept the government contract to provide social services with public money then. They totally didn't volunteer for that.

And that amendment looks like it would have allowed any discrimination by individuals so long as it's for a religious reason. This wouldn't have even applied to the church.

From the article, that particular service they provide is considered a charity, from what I read/understood.

But yeah, raised as Roman Catholic (old-school style), they are very hypocritical, hence me being just "spiritual" now, and not following any particular religion.

Yes it is. The way the article read to me though is they're pulling out of the services that they get public funds for to avoid having to do/recognize something that they view is morally wrong.
