Salvation Army bell-ringer cited for shoplifting at St. Paul Wal-Mart
Pioneer Press
Updated: 12/01/2009 08:20:36 AM CST

Police say a Salvation Army bell-ringer outside the St. Paul Wal-Mart took a break and shoplifted inside the store.

The bell-ringer was cited for misdemeanor theft, a police report said.

Loss prevention staff for the store at 1450 W. University Ave. saw Richard Earl Thomas, 44, conceal a watch and leave without paying for it, according to the report and Sgt. Paul Schnell, police spokesman. The watch was valued at $19.50, Schnell said.

Police were called to the store at 12:25 p.m. Friday. Officers cited Thomas, who was on break from his bell-ringing duties, and told him to leave the premises.

I haven't seen this anywhere, but this strikes me as an overreaction or at least misdirected anger:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...-emboldens-europes-extremists/article1383413/

As the article notes, Swiss Muslim populations are primarily drawn from areas where the religion never held a dominant position in public life and something like only 15% of Muslims in Switzerland actively practice the religion. If anything this kind of worrying as it sends a message that even when Muslim populations totally assimilate, "The West" will still stick it to them.

But wouldn't extremists say that tolerance shows weakness, and that weakness will lead to their ultimate victory?

The closest I knew about around the Twin Cities area was Howie G's, who had a 48ozer, and you had to either (it includes Texas Toast and a side of mashed potatoes):

1. Break the record (4 minutes last I heard) to get it free

or

2. Eat the steak in under 30 minutes to get a free 16 oz steak.

I tried. Failed by 15 minutes. :(

Yes! When I was going to college in Moorhead, I went to the now out of business Smokey's in West Fargo, North Dakota. They had a 52 oz. steak, baked potato, salad, and bread for $24.95. To this day, I wish I would've had it. Instead I went for the all-you-can eat bbq ribs for $7. It was a dorm floor thing. Get the ribs and you couldn't use napkins and had to wear a white shirt.

I want to meet the person who could eat that bad boy in 4 minutes, give or take. He's buying, but I'd like to meet him.

This kind of story really ****es me off!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,579147,00.html

Col. Van T. Barfoot, 90, has raised the Stars and Stripes every day at sunrise and lowered them every day at sunset since he served in the U.S. Army. But on Tuesday he received a letter from the law firm that represents his homeowners' association, ordering him to remove the flagpole from his Richmond, Va. yard by 5 p.m. on Friday or face "legal action."
...
Barfoot is one of the country's last living World War II veterans who received the Medal of Honor. He also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and earned a Purple Heart. In WWII, Barfoot showed his mettle in Carano, Italy, where he single-handedly destroyed a set of German machine gun nests, killed eight enemy soldiers, took 17 prisoners and stared down a tank before destroying it and killing its crew — all in a single day. Exhausted by his herculean efforts, he still managed to move two of his wounded men 1,700 yards to safety.
...
"I don't have any qualms with [the board's] authority, but the thing about it is that I cannot get enough conversation out of them where we can try to work out a solution," Barfoot said.
