"That's God's house. It's no place to throw fists, or shoot people, or talk about shooting people..."

Jesus Christ, what church does that guy belong to?

Re: Nice Planet © 2009

More parents who stood around praying while their son died of a treatable disease. Is it just me, or are we seeing an uptick in these stories? What can we do to protect the innocent from the very people whose first priority should be to look out for those kids?

Nothing, because people that crazy won't be deterred by a prison term. If you think taking your kid to the doctor will lose him his immortal soul, are you really going to fold in the face of 10 years in the slammer?

It's a horrible, very slow Darwinian process to weed out the folks with that sort of defect.

My late father, who was a cardio-thoracic surgeon, used to have a technique for dealing with these people. Once and a while he'd be called into the ER to try to save somebody whose chest had been crushed in a car accident.

Very infrequently these people would object, on religious grounds, to being treated. At which point the old man would announce (loudly) that the ER staff needed to "get this dead guy outta here." He said it almost always resulted in a reconsideration of their point of view.

Re: Nice Planet © 2009

It's kinda funny that this doesn't happen more down there... It's not uncommon at all for rifts to appear in churches down there and people separate into 2 separate deals....

Heck, we had a "Church" renting out the Double Play Cafe at Smokies Park on Sunday mornings because a pastor didn't like the way some kids were acting in his congregation (from what I heard, typical teenage type stuff) and the parents didn't see anything "Wrong"... So after calling them out on it, a rift formed in the congregation and this dude took his followers and left...

I would think that human nature would take over and we would see more fights over something as volatile as religion...

This is so wrong. Apparantly when people are hired as school administrators these days they have their common sense surgically removed.

By all means, let's give this kid the max.
A 2 inch pocket knife is not the same thing as a baseball bat?? bullpucky!!! If I'm fighting a couple of guys and one of them has a baseball bat and the other has that 2 inch knife, I'm worring more about the guy with the bat.

I agree this is ridiculous...

"I don't know what I could do, because technically ... I did break the rules, and I'll accept that punishment," he said.
I'm impressed by this. Sounds like a stand up kid, I hope he gets into West Point.

You know what I'd like to see?

He doesn't get into West Point - THEN he goes all Columbine out of spite.

That'd learn some administrators pretty quick.

I would hate to see a loss of life over this... How about getting denied from West Point then suing the school for millions and winning?

That would right this situation, prove the same point and actually make use of our courts being so effed up :p

Works too. Whatever causes problems for the "zero tolerance" crowd. I blame the Internet Tough Guy in me.

It's a point worth exploring though - one of these days zero tolerance is going to ruin the wrong kid's life. And the most dangerous people are the ones with nothing left to lose.

I guess the point I was making was imagine the circus that would ensue if zero tolerance actually CAUSED an incident.

I don't know beans about running a school. However, I know that a weapons policy that can't or won't differentiate between a knife locked in a car and an RPG in a kid's back pack needs tweaking.

I suspect at bottom we have lawyers to blame for this collective loss of common sense in schools around the country. Threats of suits based on not having treated kids equally. One size fits all removes any possible thought process. In the original article I posted, notice that school officials also called the cops, they wanted this kid charged with a CRIME!

A few years ago in Texas a kid spent the weekend helping his grandma move to a nursing home. Evidently a bread knife slipped out of one of the boxes and lodged in the bed of the kid's pickup. On Monday he went to class and someone noticed the knife. Long story short, he was briefly going to be banned from participating in his graduation ceremonies. . .and he was the valedictorian. IIRC he was permitted to participate.

Same point... I just saw an opportunity to use a pointless lawsuit for a good cause :p

In a related story, that school board in Delaware has relented and changed their zero tolerance policy essentially to give kindergartners and first graders a break. That means little Zach won't be sent to reform school for half a semester for bringing his "spork" to school. I dunno, that kid looks pretty mean to me.

Anyway, these imbeciles are just kicking the can down the road. What happens when a 2nd grader brings a nail clipper to school? Bread and water? Solitary? The rack? What?

Punk school board won't cut the kid some slack. Very nice. How did the school learn about this knife locked up in his car in the first place? Who ratted him out? How many freakin' Eagle Scouts who've already completed basic training do they have at that school? I'm guessing 1. "But we've got rules." Yeah, well stick your rules!

It's a far cry from when my brother brought in his single shot 20 gauge for show-and-tell.

My mom didn't stick it in and leave it, she rammed it in, lifted it against my two front teeth, then dragged it out leaving the scrapings in my mouth. Ivory.
