No guarantee that the owners rebuild in ferguson either and this may not even be covered.

Can't remember if p & c insurance covers civil unrest. I believe they exclude acts of war and I seem to remember something about civil unrest.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

But it's not A cause! The cause it simply the stupidity and uncivilized behaviors of dumb-arse protesters. Not a majority, but they are still part of that group.
IT IS a cause. It's called fight or flight. You're expecting people to act rationally when placed in an irrational situation. I am saying that the actions of police leaders and politicians before the press conference were a contributing factor to the irrational situation that occurred. I am not saying that it is the only factor, nor am I saying that it is a major factor. I am also not criticizing the actions of police once things started getting violent. And I am not condoning any of the looting or rioting. But to completely absolve police leadership and the politicians of any fault is ridiculous.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

AJ has gone off the live coverage and is replaying the news from the 9pm hour. Based on their coverage and what I saw on Twitter, I would say the peaceful protests were the vast majority of people from Ferguson and the looting and vandalism was done by a relative handful of outside agitators. Based on what they were yelling at the reporter they weren't interested in anything peaceful. Really sad on all counts. I took a picture of the reporter in his flak jacket labeled "PRESS" like we have seen in coverage from a war zone...in an American city. It's tragic.

Despite my rants, this is tragic. I fear for the "good" protesters. I fear for the residents who don't want to be involved/have businesses/properties there. Friggin' morons, as usual, ruin it for everyone.

You kind of are, when commenting on the actions/non-actions of the police force tonight. Were there probs in the past? Yes. That is fact. Tonight's preparedness was just that. Preparedness. EVERYONE was calling for peace. But some morons decided to not give an F, and riot anyway. How the police were dressed did not factor in that, no matter how you spin it.

What's "irrational" about cops standing in front of buildings in riot gear?

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Oh, no. Red's Barbeque is burning. Locally owned. G.D. it.

What are the chances the "protesters" decided to torch all these businesses independently? Something approaching zero. This was a tactic. By design.

I think what he has in mind is Barney Fife: "Can I put my bullet in, Andy?"

was it not a rational decision to place themselves within the maelstrom?

I'm sorry but I just flat out do not agree. Some of it is, I will fully admit, because I have mistrust of police, which I think is not something shared by many of you. The other part is a different point of view, I do not believe that everyone has been calling for peace. I don't view the actions taken by police leadership and politicians in the days leading to this as calls for peace, nor do I believe the actions taken by protesters as calls for peace. (edit I actually agree with Old Pio that some of this stuff has been targeted) This was a * up from both sides.

I will admit that I have been fully upset and irrational in this whole exchange and haven't been making a good point. I don't like my view being labeled as fantasy land and the like but I should've been thinking a bit more and not reacted so blindly. I'm sorry.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

The Prez called for peace. The victim's family (who I would give ultimate respect to, as for wishes) called for peace. The city and nation, in general, called for peace. Protest, sure, but don't be violent. Call it a stretch, but that's everyone, in my book.

Most of us have had rough nights on the forum.

No biggie.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Msnbc is now blaming the cops for the fires.

The ****ing balls on these guys.

You can take the "" marks away. This wasn't done by the protesters. They were across town and have mostly gone home now. These are vandals and not very likely locals. If the police want to round them up I don't know that anyone would object. The locals want them out of their town too.

On another note, I just want to commend everyone who posted tonight. With few exceptions it was a civil discussion with lots of pertinent information being shared.

Good night. On Earth peace, and good will toward men.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

The demonstrations at the '68 Democratic convention in Chicago were characterized as a "police riot" by the Kerner Commission (useless factoid: Kerner was a graduate of my high school). Yet all of the serious injuries were sustained by cops. Bodegas all over the riot area were sold out of EZ Off Oven Cleaner (to spray at cops). And the hippies also drove nails through golf balls to throw "peacefully" at officers. Cops suffered broken arms, jaws, knocked out teeth, etc.

Similarly, these concerns in Ferguson about cops over reacting strike me in the same way. Anybody been shot by a cop? Anybody been seriously injured by a cop? Perhaps. But at this hour we haven't heard about it.

Like I said, it's a different view that I have. I just hear empty words from the politicians and police and the President and the media. I don't view the Governor declaring a state of emergency as a call for peace. I just don't view police in riot gear front and center as a peaceful act. A lot of the reporting and punditry that was done was not a call for peace. There is a lot of anger in a large group of people about this and nothing was done to diffuse it in my mind. That's all I'm saying.

I know, I'm trying here.

At this point I feel like a nice stream of pony posts would do me some good. Anybody know any good threads in DI I could take care of? :D
