Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

If there is a civil trial we will get to go through all the details again.

Things this story taught me:

1) 90% of people made up their minds what happened the first ten minutes and no fact ever changed their minds thereafter
2) Nothing else

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

The Shaggy Defense is probably being asserted a lot right now in Ferguson.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Why would you announce this at 8pm? Why not at 10am?

Between the media coverage (anticipation? hype? promotion?), the timing and the somewhat expected nature of the mob... it becomes really hard to avoid those stupid paranoid thoughts that say it was somewhat staged to happen like this.

I have always been disappointed this is not called the R. Kelly Defense, to honor the man who actually tried it in real life.

That's a good point. He ought to get at least partial naming rights.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Did you all enjoy your media circus last night?

I never turned on the TV, went to bed at 11, and went to work today. Na, na, na, na, life goes on. :)

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

No great place to put this, but it should be enshrined. I wish I had written it.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

No question?

That's the point.

Sewn into the bandages over the insides of both elbows were zippered lips through which he was fed clear fluid from a clear jar. A silent zinc pipe rose from the cement on his groin and was coupled to a slim rubber hose that carried waste from his kidneys and dripped it efficiently into a clear, stoppered jar on the floor. When the jar on the floor was full, the jar feeding his elbow was empty, and the two were simply switched quickly so that stuff could drip back into him.

Wow. Glad I don't work in whatever environment fostered that. In my world most e-mails are a request for information or an effort to supply information. It is a means of having a written communication rather than an ephemeral phone call.

Dealing with similar on the project I'm on. It's for the City of Chicago so local aldermen, city officials, department of water, Chicago DOT, engineering firm doing inspection, the contractors, and everyone in between all look for blame to be passed when complaints come in.

I had no problems ever with dealing with the very picky, very stringent, Illinois Tollway; but the levels of burocracy that are on this City project makes the Tollway such a breeze.

*edit* My favorite line to cover myself when an unclear issue arises is "please advise," which is polite 'shorthand' for "What The EFF?"

In my experience this is a disease of the top level of bureaucracies. People on the bottom exchange email to get work done (1%) or waste time (99%). People at the top do it to mark their territory and give themselves a bolt hole. This is particularly true when messages descend via corporate channels. All such content serves as institutional CYA. "Your honor, we have detailed records of the receipt of our workplace harassment policy by the defendant, thus proving our exemption from any liability."

Edit: oh, "please advise" is a wondrous thing. I typically use it to tell the people on the cc list that I realize what the sender is saying is insane and/or illegal, and I want them on the record more explicitly, with lots and lots of witnesses.

Yep.

According to reporters who were witnessing the looting, the majority were teenagers.

Of course they came from Chicago, Memphis and other places having made arrangements ahead of time to travel to Ferguson so they could start trouble. Right?

Couldn't possibly be crimes of opportunity could they? That never happens, right?

I love how some berate people for listening and parroting the Faux talking points while hungrily consuming the lefty ones.

Were the LA rioters also from out of town while the locals were all choirboys?

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Seems to me that whatever happened prejudiced or not it's probably not a good idea to give a cop any reason to shoot at you.

And, the idiocy of the rioters astounds me. I have never, nor will I ever be tempted to riot.
