Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

CONTEXT. Gave due warning. Didn't move. Sorry. Advocating it would be saying "blocking my way, screw it, I'm flooring it."

Goddam you are dense on this.
You're still saying that if they don't move, people have the right to run them over.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

With due warning? Yep. Not blindly advocating.
You're still advocating that people have the right to potentially hurt or kill other people! WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot is wrong with calling the police like a normal person?

And I'm insane?!?

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

I think I've been on the side of the argument that most of the people backing the driver have had on this subject, and in this case you're all wrong. The driver was an idiot. He/she inched into the crowd which was completely unnecessary, and when they obviously bumped into someone it incited them to react. Yeah, I would have then got the hell out of there then too, but I wouldn't have found myself in that spot in the first place by trying to push through a standing crowd of people - just like the more intelligent drivers that went around without issue.

That said, JimJ is cracked - these protestors aren't bringing awareness to anything and should go home. Everyone already knows about this subject and loitering isn't going to do anything to solve it, it's only going to cause more anger and for all the wrong reasons. If you really, really, really and I mean sincerely care about the cause , donate money to the attorney's for the family bringing civil suits. Let them have a day in court with an opportunity to prove the shooting violated his civil rights. Short of that you're barking at the moon and I have zero respect for any of them that aren't immediately tied to the family.

If an angry mob starts banging on my windows, I'm gunning it - regardless of how I came to be in the angry mob. By that point, it's simply self-preservation.

Not saying it's okay to drive through protestors who are in the street, just sayin' that you ain't dragging me from my car and beating me without me first running some of your dumbasses over.

I'm also not gonna shed any tears for any idiots who are intentionally blocking traffic and get hit. Get out of the ****ing street! Protest in a park or a parking lot.

If you think all of this is just about Michael Brown then that's reason enough to continue this. It's about way more than Michael Brown. It's about militarization of police in this country, it's about how there's little accountability for police officers using deadly force, it's about racism in our society, it's about people *ing dying.

Everybody complains that the people affected by these issues never do anything and yet, here are they are doing something about it in a non-violent, and the response is basically "go away" or "do it some place where I can ignore you". This isn't going to go away, things have to change, and that's why these types of protests are taking place.

It's about a governor who doesn't want to make a hard decision to get a special prosecutor because that might make him unpopular, and a DA who doesn't want to commit political suicide by going after one of the people he works with on a daily basis. Basically a lot of people see the system as being broken and I find it difficult to disagree at this point. It's a large systemic issue that goes well beyond Ferguson.

And that's why you are seeing protests across the country. This isn't an issue confined to just Michael Brown and Ferguson, MO. People are upset about this and aren't just going to go away. The whole point of these protests is civil disobedience, it's about disrupting the normal routine, putting it a place where you can't ignore it because it's an issue that has been ignored.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

No, it's not about any of that because not only are all these complaints not legitimately relative to this case, but I sincerely doubt the vast majority of the rioters are that thoughtful in the first place.

I'm not talking about rioters. I'm talking about people protesting in the streets.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Depends on how long it takes the police to move them.

so I get a heckler's veto on traffic until the cops show up? What if the cops are afraid of enciting a large mob which is entertaining a heckler's veto on traffic.

Its about being ignorant about facts and letting righteousness trump reality. Its about a moralistic concern that society may be bad and using specious evidence to then take that and get in people's faces. Its a movement sans factual legitimacy spurned by those who have been told all their lives its their moral mandate to fight perceived injustice.

Take away the romanticism. This isn't the great cause of our time... its a lump of morons looking to be a part of supporting some cause to make themselves feel great and righteous. Its moral masturbation combined with inherent self-justification.

I'm not talking about rioters. I'm talking about people protesting in the streets.

A message board populated almost exclusively by upper middle class white guys isn't exactly a place that is going to respond to the concerns of inner city minorities.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

I'm glad I missed this exchange last night.

My question: Wouldn't it have been better for the car to turn around and find an alternate route?

When the stupid 99%er's marched in Chicago a few years back during a global summit, the CPD blocked streets off to allow the protesters to do their thing.

Sounds, from what limited info I gathered skimming the last few pages, like the Minneapolis police were less prepared to reroute traffic around the protesters.

Also, it sounds like Brent is a big John Scott fan... ;) :D
