Re: Nice Planet 6: Get Me Off This Planet.

As comedian Ron White tweeted, "an hour later the dogs were hungry.". :D

Orwell couldn't have conceived of the NORKS. Interestingly (and repetitively) the silence from the left about the depredations in that horrific place stands in stark contrast with the hysterical condemnations by their grand parents over the "dictatorial" Syngman Rhee. Help me out here. How did that North versus South thing work out?

Awwww....it could be a hoax.

Initial speculation was that Jang had been killed by firing squad, a fate that media outlets said was the usual one reserved for "traitors". But an alternative narrative of the 67-year old's death emerged on what appears to have been a satirical post on the Chinese Tencent Weibo site that has been repeated by many media outlets worldwide.

To put it another way, even the Chinese can enjoy a laugh at the NORK regimes' expense. ;)

On a far more serious note, who wants to bet that the writer will be executed himself, for something like "shaming the Chinese media on the international stage"?

Meet: "True Goon Tocool Sneekey". This thug punched an old lady in the face, for kicks. Guess what charges he's not facing? H*ll, the Rochester police are only charging him with "harassment." Evidently punching someone in the face isn't assault anymore. No outrage from the "Justice" Department. Quelle surprise.

Excellent piece in Slate on the Satanic ritual sex abuse fever that gripped much of the country in the 80's and 90's. Shocking and unbelievable. But it happened. As a consequence,we had "recovered" memories and an avalanche of MPD sufferers. And always, always, the claim was: "Believe the children." It was utter nonsense, of course. But hundreds of lives were shattered: innocent children made to believe they were victims. Dozens of innocent adults prosecuted and in some cases convicted. The Slate piece tells the story of the Kellers, who spent 20 years behind bars for totally unbelievable "crimes." The lesson we should all learn here is to resist suspension of skepticism and the lure of junk science.

Stay Classy Texas

Just when it seems the state of Texas couldn’t be any more cruel in its treatment of women, it forces a dead woman to incubate a fetus. This is in spite of the wishes of the woman, clearly expressed during her life, as well as the wishes of both her husband and her parents.
Already dead, but put on life support anyway.

Marlise Munoz collapsed on her kitchen floor shortly after Thanksgiving and died, apparently from a pulmonary embolism. Her husband, Erick, found her not breathing and with no pulse. Her brain may not have had oxygen for up to an hour. Erick performed CPR and called an ambulance. After Marlise was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, in Ft. Worth, her heart was artificially restarted with electric shocks and drugs. She was put on life-support because she was 14 weeks pregnant and, at that point, a fetal heartbeat could be detected. However, her brain showed no activity and she was legally dead.

Marlise and Erick were both paramedics and agreed together, in no uncertain terms, that they never wanted to be kept alive artificially. They had seen the bad outcomes of such cases too often in their work. But when the family requested that Marlise be taken off of life support, the hospital refused because of the pregnancy.

In the meantime, Marlise’s husband and parents have no part in making decisions about what will happen to her, or how the medical team will proceed with the fetus. They hope that their story will prompt others to change the law. Their already long, hard process of saying good-bye was made tortuous by the state of Texas. Plus, the media attention over the controversy has triggered ugly accusations against the family by the anti-woman right.
