Sorry, I'll disagree on that. These guys deserve every bit of our honor and respect. But giving them dispensation to enter where others are prohibited would be favoritism. If the memorial should be open for one, it should be open for all. In other words, it should be open for all.

Obama does it again

Head Start programs have been shuttered, small businesses can’t get loans and hundreds of thousands of federal government employees are furloughed. But the exclusive gyms available only to members of Congress have remained open throughout the shutdown.

A House aide confirmed to ThinkProgress that the House member’s gym is open. The House gym features a swimming pool, basketball courts, paddleball courts, a sauna, a steam room and flat screen TVs. While towel service is unavailable, taxpayers remain on the hook for cleaning and maintenance, which has been performed daily throughout the shutdown. There are also costs associated with the power required to heat the pools and keep the lights on.

According to the aide, the decision to keep the gym open — even while other critical government services were shelved — came directly from Speaker Boehner’s office. Meanwhile, the staff gym available to Congressional staff has been closed.

You mean favoritism like closing commissaries on military bases while keeping the military golf course Neville plays open? I conditioned my statement with an assumption that there's a requirement to "close" these outdoor facilities--which of course there isn't. Either way, I think our republic could survive an exception to allow 90-year old vets a chance to see the monument dedicated to them. Very few Americans would take exception. I just thought a mean spirited Chicago hack like Neville might want to show a glimmer of humanity and respect. Alas, not to be.

Would the foundations of the Republic turn to dust if ordinary citizens decided to bypass the barriers and stroll through the open air memorials / monuments in DC?

BTW, the golf courses are supported by user fees, so in the infinite wisdom, they can stay open because no tax dollars are used for the operation and upkeep. The PX's and others are, apparently, not.

And, then there are the contracted Catholic priests who are not allowed to celebrate the sacraments on or in DoD facilites.

"Supported by private dollars" hasn't stopped Gestapo like tactics in numerous other reported incidents. One of my favorites: holding tourists (some international) hostage at Yellowstone. Confined to their hotel by armed rangers who are there to "help" them. These same thugs wouldn't allow the senior citizen tourists to stop on their way out of the park to take pictures. Or to use a full service roadside facility for a rest stop. The dignity of the Republic hangs in the balance, don't you know? Some of those foreign tourists thought they were under arrest.

But you're exactly right, these open air facilities, which have never been "closed" in prior government "shutdowns" should be available to all, 24/7. In Nevilleworld an "immigration reform" pep rally on the national mall is approved, "shutdown" or no "shutdown," because "it's a First Amendment issue."* But visiting D-Day cemeteries is not. Tell that to this old vet.

All of the collateral damage from the shut down is tied to your peeps in congress.

While it's terrible that these veterans are being disrespected, this isn't even in the top 100 of bad things happening because of the GOP's shut down.

Keep posting articles though. I'm sure we'll start supporting the vaginal ultrasound party if only you post one more article about a veteran denied access to a monument, never mind the thousands of disabled veterans who are having their benefits and care delayed thanks to the vaginal ultrasound party's shut down.

Stinky, who knew you were a "pro choice" monomaniac? And that you somehow think it's relevant here? Just curious, are you taking one of those vocabulary self-help courses where you get extra credit every time you can work "vaginal ultrasound" into the conversation, whether it makes sense or not?

I'll overlook the fact you've voted twice in my poll to see if any ladies of the chorale have the character to criticize or object to anything Neville does. Personally, if a bunch of illegals and their congressional panderers want to get together on the Mall, they can knock themselves out (although I would hope they'd clean up after themselves). I would just like the same courtesy extended to elderly vets. You apparently don't.

As I've explained, and you well know, this mean-spirited, legally unnecessary hassling of veterans is voluntary. Republicans have zip to do with it. Having armed uniformed goons (SEIU, anyone?) literally and figuratively pushing elderly vets around may not register on your obviously corroded equipment, but it does for millions of Americans. And that's what's got you concerned, isn't it? Optics. Winning.

This whole business is silly, and beneath the dignity of a great nation. And I'm speaking of both sides. Notwithstanding, this nonsense of closing open air facilities is entirely on Neville and hasn't occurred in previous "shutdowns." And no amount of spin or misdirection or moral equivalency can change that fact. You're evidently okay with it. Or at least okay enough you won't criticize the person responsible.

You point out that there are other people suffering because of the "shutdown." That's true. But how does it make the disrespectful treatment of these vets acceptable? So you've voted twice in my poll. And both times the answer has been "no." There's nothing Neville can do that will cause you to utter a peep of protest or disagreement. Baghdad Bob's got nothin' on you, pal.

Not that it matters, but if you're going to draw conclusions from the articles you post, you should probably do so accurately. The delivery of medical services by the VA and its clinics is not being affected by this "shutdown." So no care is being "delayed." But processing those claims and issuing the checks to vets is very important. And one of the principal reasons, IMO, this should and will be ended soon. You probably just made an honest mistake. But when Neville claimed clinics would be "closed," it was more likely a lie. Not to worry, you wouldn't criticize that, either, would you?

Maximum leader is never wrong. It's always someone else's fault. How 'bout this: YOU own that cheap suit and his disrespect for our veterans. Okay? It's all yours. And it evidently would break your little heart to admit it. I'll explain it again since you were evidently sexting with the lunch lady earlier: the "closing" of the Mall and the resulting serial insults to elderly veterans is 100% Neville's fault. Now here's the tricky part, so pay attention: but that is only a part of the "shutdown." Not the whole thing. And that's all I'm talking about.

But you are so entirely caught up in the politics of this matter (needing a "win") that you can't see Neville has crossed a line. Neville wants to hassle those vets. And you are simply too intellectually dishonest or blinded by the light to admit it. Similarly, you're too intellectually dishonest to own up to your mistake about the VA.

And it's entirely up to you whether you care about assassinated police officers (in Chicago or anywhere else) or not. But cracking wise about a murdered cop to show your churlish disagreement with me shows zero class. Zero.
