Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

Police went a little overboard I think.

I mean, the kid is obviously in the situation for very stupid reasons that could've been easily avoided by either himself or his father being less moronic, but how does not turning the engine off lead to firing six shots into the car?

Seems to me that a stupidity meeting was called to order and everyone involved got a gold star.

Having been there and done that (not the firing six shots), I can surmise that after being rammed by Comstock (according to the story) the officer likely felt his life was in danger when Comstock "revved the engine and refused orders to turn it off."

Am I justifying his actions? No. Do I understand his actions? Absolutely.

Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson pursued Comstock into the heart of ISU’s campus. During the chase, Comstock rammed McPherson’s car. The truck eventually stopped, but Comstock revved the engine and refused orders to turn it off.

McPherson fired six shots into the truck. Comstock died from two gunshot wounds, according to the Iowa state medical examiner’s office.

James Comstock said his son was not carrying a weapon.
It's pretty easy to argue that the kid was using the truck as a weapon, and by revving the engine after ordered to turn off the vehicle, the officer felt threatened. The kid already showed intent to cause harm by using the truck to ram the squad car. At this point in the process, I give benefit of the doubt to Officer McPherson.

The Redskins aren't the only football team catching flack for it's name and mascot.

A national anti-discrimination group is pressuring Coachella Valley High School to abandon its longstanding mascot — a sneering, hook-nosed “Arab,” sometimes with a single tooth.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee sent a letter on Friday chastising the Coachella Valley Unified School District for “orientalist stereotyping” in school murals, football halftime shows and the mascot in general.

According to the Coachella Valley High School Alumni Association, the Arab mascot was chosen in the 1920s to acknowledge the east valley’s reliance on date farming, a traditionally Middle Eastern crop. Another link between the Middle East and the east valley can be seen in the name of the nearby community of Mecca, the association states.

When you have no argument, resort to childish personal attacks. That's the Rover way!

Hey, nobody told him to involve me in this thread, so he gets what he deserves! Besides, looks like I'm speaking the truth on this one...

When I was working in Omaha, the PD modified their use of deadly force policy, essentially limiting the circumstances under which an officer could draw and fire. Almost immediately, there were several incidents of suspects attempting to run down officers. The new policy was reversed.

I wonder what people's reactions would be had Comstock hit 3 or 4 people on campus during this ordeal? Because that could have easily happened in the middle of the day like this...

His mother is quoted as saying "He's pretty rational when he calms down"....well, he wasn't calm.

He was always a good boy. Never had any trouble with him.

Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

The issue is explosive.

I've posted before about the night riders of political correctness going after a Milwaukee area high school with an Indian related nickname and logo. One high school in the same district with the "offensive" school put up a generic logo in its field house, so as to avoid "giving offense," and to prove what superior humans they were.
Turns out there was a substantial Indian population in the "offending" school's community and they approved of the logo and whatever other symbols were used and had worked with the school on the design. Those dumb injuns were just too stupid to realize they should have been offended.

You know there was a pun there?

These two Upper-East Side losers should both go to their rooms without dinner!

Where's that Keanu quote.......

A Manhattan dad is not lovin’ McDonald’s right now.

Attorney David Schorr slapped a court-appointed shrink with a defamation lawsuit for telling the judge deciding a custody battle with his estranged wife that he was an unfit parent — for refusing to take his son to the fast food joint for dinner.

“You’d think it was sexual molestation,” Schorr, 43, told The Post Thursday. “I am just floored by it.”

Schorr says in his Manhattan Supreme Court suit that E. 97th Street psychiatrist Marilyn Schiller filed a report saying he was “wholly incapable of taking care of his son” and should be denied his weekend visitation over the greasy burger ban.
