Re: Nice planet 4: Take 2. Action!

How do you know what she eats? And in what quantities and frequency? And how much exercise she gets? And what difference does that make anyway? She's not forcing anyone to prepare and eat what she features on her show. I doubt you're qualified to establish a causal relationship between the cuisine featured on her show, her personal diet and her illness. This is the kind of thinking that leads a clown like Bloomberg to think how much soda I drink at lunch is his business. You aren't one of those people who wants to use the power of government to compel others to do "what's good for them" are you? You're treading dangerously close to blaming the victim here.

As to this "hypocrisy" charge, it would be hypocritical if she'd previously poo pooed the inherent risks of a diet consisting primarily of the foods she features on her show. Or disputed the efficacy of the medications she now endorses. But that's not the case. She announced her illness. And subsequently signed to endorse a medication which controls it (there is no "curing," it's a chronic condition). And being critical of her for the type of foods she features would be akin to criticizing Julia Child "all she ever cooks is French."
There is too a cure for Type II diabetes. Its called having people stop bringing you junk food and getting up off your lazy *** to exercise and lose weight. Too many people out there just wanna take a pill and have their problems go away without work.

I don't, but that's irrelevant. If Paula follows all of her doctor's orders in that regard, then good for her. However, from what I've seen, she and the Food Network continue to promote her brand of butter-soaked, sugar-laden soul food, and in my opinion that is hypocritical when juxtaposed against her diabetic condition. What diet and lifestyle Americans want to follow and eat is their business, not mine.

She's not forcing anyone to prepare and eat what she features on her show.

You are correct

Nice of you to extrapolate one post all the way out to me being a Bloomberg supporter, which I am not. I think Bloomberg is retarded, as you can see by my statement above. It seems to me that what has happened is that you've mistaken my general dislike and snark for 90% of Food Network personalities (up from 80% since Alton Brown's show was cancelled last year), for some sort of crusade against culinary and dietary freedom. My apologies for being unclear, and enjoy the rest of your evening.

The key, of course, is moderation. And personal responsibility. We're even seeing lawsuits against fast food places from folks who weigh in like a Yokozuna. Unless Mickey D's is Shanghaiing (am I allowed to say that?) customers and forcing them to eat Big Macs, I don't see a problem. You are clearly a Food Network fan. I'm far less familiar, having almost never watched. "Man vs. Food" is more my speed. After all, he eats in restaurants.

You are clearly a Food Network fan.

Used to be, before about 2005 or so. Don't really care for what they've turned into, with the snooze-worthy "Cupcake Wars" and "Next Food Network Star" reality segments. And since Alton's Good Eats has been cancelled, and Bourdain has been on Travel Channel & now CNN since 2005, I couldn't care less about their future.

You an endocrinologist? I'd say you're a little empathy deprived. Let's see if I can summarize your attitude: "It's their fault, fcuk 'em."

Is Food Network the one that has (had?) the Barefoot Contessa? She was terrific and always feeding her gay friends.

As a kid in Chicago, there was a local cooking show featuring Francois Pope. He did all of his cooking in a double breasted suit and referred to viewers as "students."

I also like "Kitchen Nightmares." His comments about the food and décor are generally quite entertaining. He once described the booths in a restaurant as "looking like my grandmother's luggage." Definitely not a compliment.

Like all "reality" shows, there's the weekly phony antagonism. Right, your place is on its a*s, a TV show moves in and sets up the lights, prepares to remodel your joint for free, and you're going to ignore or resist the advice of an enormously successful guy. Makes sense to me. Ramsey's advice is the same every week: clean up your kitchen, cook fresh and reduce the number of items on your menu.

Just a quick chime-in: Man Vs Food is awesome, and I'll watch rerun marathons of DDD, just to keep note of places I may go to on my travels. Otherwise? Meh on the food shows.

Never any pressure to prepare the items at home. And none of the food has pretensions of haute cuisine, either.

Re: Nice planet 4: Take 2. Action!

We are through the looking glass here, if I'm even moderately sympathetic to Anthony Weiner. Some old lady referred to another NYC mayoral candidate using the synomym for the wall holding the water out of Holland. Weiner suggested she shouldn't use language like that. Is that good enough for LGBT Kapos? You bet your Advocate it's not. Guess they figure he should have knocked the old lady down, or something. I realize it's a campaign and all, but this is just stupid.

Re: Nice planet 4: Take 2. Action!

Remember the Texas high school valedictorian who had his speech interrupted when his mic was killed because he'd evidently strayed into unapproved territory, talking about his religious convictions? Evidently the principal wasn't satisfied and was threatening to send a letter to the Naval Academy (to which the young man had been accepted) throwing him under the bus as a person of "low character". The school board quickly stepped back from that threat. Since the kid had submitted his text in advance for approval and since he deviated from that text, I'm pretty sympathetic to school officials. But trying to queer the kid's admission to Annapolis is vindictive and just plain wrong, period. Somebody needs to tell the principal about perspective.

Well, it is. Calories in and not spent have to go somewhere, and sorry Dorothy, it just can't magically go to that starving kid in Africa. Its going to add to that second chin you have, or right to the old FUPA. Eating right and exercise would fix about 99 percent of all type II diabetic cases.

These consults on the house? Or are you going to bill us, "doc"? I'd say your medical knowledge is on a par with your empathy for others who aren't perfect, like you. However, there are occupations where being a pompous prig isn't a handicap.

What's the matter Fatty?? Don't like it when people pick on the chubbies?? Again, I'll say it again. They ate the calories that got them to be bloated messes that would be the first ones to go in a Zombie Apocalypse. They didn't burn off those calories and they have those calories stored as fat. No amount of mumbo-jumbo psychobabble is going to change the fact that they still need to change their diets and start exercising to lose weight, to get trimmed down to a more healthy weight.

Classy. But typical.

Re: Nice planet 4: Take 2. Action!

Go cry in your ice cream fatty!! Just remember to lift your neck rolls up later on to wash underneath them. That will help you from smelling all funky you hippopotamic land mass.

I thought you had to be at least 12 to post here. Evidently not.

Explain to me again how my sins justify yours. All of you a*sholes would be rendered mute if you couldn't argue tu quoque.

As a Type II diabetic for 11 years, I'm going to take you to task over your "cure".

When I was diagnosed, I was 6'2" and 210-15 pounds and still in pretty good shape for a 49 year old. I exercised regularly -- played hockey at least once a week, walked 18 holes once or twice a week and hit the gym several days a week.

I watched what I ate, but I will admit that there were too many late night pasta meals after an Icers road game. I still joke that they were behind me becoming diabetic, but I know that is far from the truth.

My diet (other than those post-game dinners) was pretty healthy. Junk food was not a regular part of my meal plans, but I profess a sweet tooth.

Eleven years later, my weight is about the same - and my exercise regimen hasn't changed, with the exception of not skating for too long due to a bad ankle. In fact, I would say I'm healthier as I close in on 60 than I was when I was diagnosed.

I've gone from diet and exercise to oral meds and injections and I've been on an insulin pump for the past three years.

Bottom line - my diabetes isn't because I was a junk food scarfing couch potato. Mine was a result of a failing pancreas -- and there are thousands of otherwise healthy people who suffer the same fate.
