Re: Nice Planet 3: I Can't Believe I Share A Planet With THESE People!

I'm shocked that people think shirts with pictures of guns on them are offensive. It's just so silly. Guns 'n' Roses t-shirts would never be allowed these days and yet they were everywhere in classes when I was in school... and I recall nary a school shooting all that time.

People have lost their way when it comes to apply simple sense to situations these days.

I don't find it offensive. I've got nothing against guns and come from a hunting/pro-gun family.

I can see that a grade school might see things differently though and if he was told to turn it around, he should have complied and none of this would have happened.

Love how the dad (iirc) said it was a picture of a hunting rifle though.

I know for a fact that Guns & Roses shirts were banned back when I was in elementary and middle school. I also know shirts with guns on them were banned.

I don't think it's offensive, I just don't think it's appropriate attire for school children to be wearing.

G'n'R shirts are not banned (that I know of) at my kid's school and he has one and wears it. He's in 8th grade.

If they were banned though, or if they all of a sudden became a problem, I'd expect him to comply with a teacher's request to turn it around - even if I don't agree with the school on this. I would NOT expect him to argue to the point that he gets thrown out or that a police officer needs to show up.

I'm all for freedom of speech and expression, but I'm not sure it's up to our 8th graders to carry that torch at their middle school.

Agreed. There are places to put up a fight over freedom of speech, but middle school really isn't one of those generally, unless students are getting whacked on grades for expressing their point of view on a topic or something.

They weren't banned in Scott Highlands Middle School during the late 80's and into the early 90's when I was there.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd much rather have kids taught about guns...taught to respect them, and taught to handle them safely than to turn guns into a mystical forbidden fruit that kids will no doubt be curious about and want to experiment with.

That's what the NRA used to be about.

Philadelphia squirrels deny their child medical care and he dies. THIS IS THE SECOND CHILD THEY'VE KILLED!!!!!!! The judge threw the book at them the first time around, putting them on 10 year's probation. This time they'll probably have to surrender their their library cards. These slow motion serial killers have 7 other kids. Somebody remind me, what did the Keanu Reeves character say in "Parenthood" about who can become a parent?

"Call my mama." Last words of a 15-year old gunned down in Chicago. If we only had background checks.

If only you didn't enjoy tracking/reporting deaths thinking that you are scoring some great moral victory.

There had been a dice game in the backyard but Rutledge said Cornelius wasn't playing. "He was just waiting for us."

Police have said the shooting may be gang-related. "It was dark, it was in the backyard, shots rang out. I knew they were going to say gang-related," Rutledge said. "He hung out with gang members but I don't think he was part of a gang.
Fantastic parenting.

Fantastic parenting.

Of course. The ruthless, emotional exploitation of the Newtown parents' suffering on the other hand, is statesmanship.
