NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

4PM Friday? The smoke is getting a little thicker if there isn't a fire. Isn't that the "ideal" time to break news because the major media will be off for the weekend, and a new story will fill the headlines Monday morning?

Just remember that the BSU/UNO to the WCHA teleconference was at 4:30 PM on a Friday. Sometimes stuff happens just because that's when it happens. The WCHA thing was because it got approval that midday and they couldn't pull off getting all interested parties together until 4:30...

Besides... isn't that a good time to get yourself drunk silly in celebration... no work on Saturday afterall...

I agree, but I think that Detroit will get right of first refusal to go east.
Yeah, it would be a cold day in Hades before Bettmann would do anything nice for Detroit!

Plus, kicking Columbus or Nashville east does have it's merits.

I also wonder if there has been any thought about breaking up the NYC 3 and putting one of those teams in a separate division as the other 2 teams. The odd team in the other division would have more games against different teams, which might excite the rabid hockey fan a little more perhaps?

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Here's what I'm hoping for at 4 pm today:

1) The Thrashers announce that the team has been sold to True North Sports and Entertainment and will relocate to Winnipeg immediately
2) The NHL Board approves the move
3) Gary Bettman plops a brick
4) The CoG, NHL and Mathiew Hulsizer can't come to terms on the sale of the 'Yotes and CoG is on the hook for this year's $25 million in losses
5) The NHL is stuck operating the 'Yotes as a lame duck franchise for '11-'12 while seeking an owner who is willing to buy or move the team

In that scenario, everyone gets what they deserve:

The 'Peg gets a team
The NHL and Bettman get stuck with the bill (and the responsibility of fixing what they screwed up in the first place)
And CoG gets its rink and a GWI lawsuit (I read somewhere that the GWI would sue if CoG payed that $25 mil for back operating debt)

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

I got a sneaking suspicion that the city councilman was trolling everyone, and it's just about the midget team winning the Telus Cup.

3) Gary Bettman plops a brick

While that would be funny, my ideal scenario is Phoenix to Winnipeg and Atlanta to Hamilton. Admittedly, I'm hoping for Carolina to Hartford, Colorado to Quebec City, San Jose to Cleveland, and New Jersey to Kansas City, too.

*sigh*

I hate Twitter. It's the ultimate triumph of ****-poor journalism and running with the first rumor you hear without fact-checking your sources.

That's not twitter's fault. That's the internet's fault. We live in an instant gratification generation and twitter simply is the most simplistic way to get it. The internet has just about killed print journalism, but before that, TV and radio did the same thing - run with a story because it was immediate and the paper is yesterday's news.

It's the IT truism: Garbage in, garbage out.

Well, if the 'Peg gets a team in time for next year (tick tock), it'll be the Thrashers. If this gets put off 'til next off season, add the Blue Jackets to the relocation list and remove the Islanders (not that the NHL would even consider losing a NY market team).

Personally, if we can't get Carolina to move back, I wouldn't mind seeing the Islanders move to Hartford. Don't know if they can get the Whale back, but it would be a good move I think, provided they get a good arena and whatnot.

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Hartford is not remotely close to a major professional sports city. Just no. It's like suggesting Grand Rapids, Michigan get a NHL team.
