NHL 2026: The Olympics Will Be Mammoth!

So a dumb question- how can there be a penalty after an offsides? Doesn't the play reset to the offsides so the penalty didn't happen?
The NHL, correctly for once, doesn't want egregious conduct that happens after a possible reviewed play to go unpunished, so by rule any penalties that happen still get called.

I'm fine with that.

If they want to change it so that it can't result in a penalty shot (because they're essentially after the whistle penalties at that point), I'd be ok with that.

I'm also in favor of changing the rule so that they can't review an offside entry if more than XX seconds have passed since the entry. Because at that point it really didn't impact the play.

But doesn't the play revert the clock back to the time of the offsides?

If goals are disallowed, I just don't understand how penalties are allowed, unless it's some kind of post whistle roughing thing. Especially rewarding a penalty shot for a breakaway that didn't actually happen because of it being offsides. If the play didn't happen, then how did the penalty happen that was not a post whistle roughing?

Given all of the BS they let happen after the whistle, even a tripping would have to be pretty bad to match what they don't call after the whistle.

It's the inconsistency that I honestly don't understand- if that small hook is a penalty when the play should have been whistled dead before that happened, then they should be calling all of the face washing let alone all of the punching. While the hook prevented a scoring chance, it wasn't some kind of terrible post whistle thing.

I’d think it’d be difficult to judge if whether a penalty occurred because of the offside zone entry or if it occurred despite the offside zone entry so it’s far easier to just say that all penalties stand.

To be fair, soccer does the same thing with yellow and red cards even if VAR wipes out a play. Though they do make an exception specifically for DOGSO and Stopping A Promising Attack cards (any of those are wiped out).

Because the rule specifically says they are. And I'm fine with that.

Why are first downs in football dramatically measured with chains while the actual placement of the football is essentially done by a combination of guesses and estimations by the line judges and umpire (And frankly, the initial placement of said chains is an estimate by the chain gang)?

All sports have their quirks. If I were to hazard a guess, we'll see the penalty shot option taken out in a future rules change, but the penalties themselves will still stand.
