NHL 2021: I Pledge Allegiance to Gritty

Red Wings twitter is all on board the Trotz to Detroit bandwagon.

Winging it in Motown had a good take on that:
"Trotz is an interesting case in that there are plenty of reasons he wouldn't end up as Detroit's coach (he wants a team closer to contending and Yzerman wants a coach who doesn't want his job), but if he does end up here it would solve those questions."

I'm..... not sold on Trotz. It seemed despite the great relationship between Milwaukee and Nashville, for every single "home grown talent," a dozen never got the chance or were mismanaged when called up. (Part of that may have been the GM, and thr assistants, I don't follow the Preds *that* close.

I can't see the Wings being *that* close to turning this around. But, I could be wrong.

This is going to be rambly - sorry.

I also didn't follow Nashville closely either. I just remember Trotz being with the Preds forever. That makes me think he can be patient with an organization. Of course he's at a different spot in his career too, and that's my biggest question with Trotz - will he be willing to be patient for a 2-3 seasons of not making the playoffs? As for Yzerman x Trotz, I can see Yzerman working with a strong coach - Tampa has proven that - and there is zero chance that Trotz will take Stevie's job.

Trotz reminds me of a more experienced Blashill. Defensive minded, payed his dues with teams that were awful. Trotz left eventually when he realized the Preds weren't going to get there and did it in Washington.

I don't know how much credit to put on the coaches developing the players, or the players just being good enough to survive. There has got to be some of each but hell if I know where to assign it. Did Blashill do poorly? Maybe. The Wings were able to score with their young talent, but the defense was a dumpster fire when Seider wasn't on the ice. Does Trotz fix that? Probably, but that's likely because Edvinsson becomes the next Seider - not because Trotz gets more out of 3rd line defensemen. It would fix itself next year with better D parings.

I will not be upset if they hire Trotz because I do believe he is a good coach.

Edit: Because I forgot he went to Washington to get his Cup and not with the Preds. Oof.

Not ever. Well, maybe in the '50s and '60s. This wasn't even a rivalry in the 2010s when the Hawks were on their three Cup run.

Are the new generation of Wings fans really buying that sh*t? I'm pretty sure the Bruins are a bigger rival than the Blackhawks are.

I'm not even sure why Tampa would also be considered a rival. Other than Stevie going to run them for a while, who even cares about Tampa from here- other than it being a great place to see a hockey game?

One other consideration- Toronto was chosen for the game at The Big House for a reason.

I appreciate the insight as well. Yeah, Trotz wouldn't be a bad pick, and does seem very loyal if you treat him right which bodes well for the rebuild.

I've since seen four or five other lists; the Blackhawks are on all of them.

But it doesn't matter; the interesting idea is a list by fans. If you're right then fine the list will correct. Like a Republican would say, just pick the right voters.

Maybe it is my age showing, but despite the move to the East, I still see the Avs as a rival. I'm old enough to remember when the list was 1) Claude Lemieux 2) Patrick Roy 3) Colorado Avalanche

Tampa Bay is a toss up. Seeing as Stevie came home, there isn't any reason to be a rival.

The Blackhawks, I dont see as a rival. They always had Jan Brady / Little Brother syndrome, especially in the '90s and '00s when they couldn't win for sh*t and their fans kept starting "Detroit Sucks" chants. Thanks Jeremy Piven. That was weird to hear when I first moved to Chicago in 2006, because it's like "have you seen your own team?" And the sunset of the Wings era coincided with the rise of the Hawks. (Still bitter over Kronwall deflecting the 2013 GM7 GWG in; that's how I knew the Wings were done for a decade.) Hawks fans kept on with the "Detroit sucks!" and it's like "we know, we're old and Kenny Holland ain't helping anymore (or ever (stares at Jim Nill leaving when it should have been Holland)).

As for college hockey, this *absolutely* needs to be done and would be such a fun piece.
