NHL 2016.1 -- Anyone have a Laine on a new Auston?

You're 1 for 2 at this point, Captain 'spreader. Buy yourself a lotto ticket.

To be fair, the first point was practically the free square on a bingo card. We all knew Holland would try to move the contract.

Sure.

However, to go from the quoted prices the last couple of weeks (Mantha or Svech or AA + swap 1sts) where it sounded like it may not happen, to this? This is pretty effing good. :)

It's a lopsided deal for now that makes the kid GM look stupid to the average fan. If AZ's pick pans out, then it could eventually swing in their favor.

Probably. But it helps the Coyotes with their annual "let's get to the salary floor," and they don't have to cut a check to Datsyuk thanks to "suspending" him for not showing to training camp.

Hilarity will ensue though if something happens in the KHL, and Datsyuk returns to the US... :D

I would LOVE to try to get their game issued Datsyuk Coyotes jersey though. :D

SCSU's Cholowski is now their highest drafted recruit at #20. The prior highest pick was Matt Cullen at #35. He's done all right for himself, so really hoping this is a good sign even if Cholowski did go to Detroit (ew).

Tough to accept losing Andrew Shaw.:(

At the emotional level, the two second round picks are no comfort at all. Maybe after the picks turn into real players tomorrow, a silver lining will emerge. Or maybe not.

That's the salary cap, baby.

Re: NHL 2016.1 -- Anyone have a Laine on a new Auston?

And then there's the sad case of the Blue Jackets.

As a result of the lottery, they moved up from #4 to #3. IIRC, that's the first time in franchise history they've ever moved up in the draft. So what do they do? They voluntarily move down a spot or two, and get absolutely nothing in return. Not even the proverbial bag of pucks. It's almost as if the top priority was to keep the luckless streak intact.

No doubt they still got a good player. And as someone who maintains only a distant secondary loyalty to the CBJ, I can't claim any personal damage. But Jackets fans deserve better than today's "trade."

Wing brass said they expected him in school for three years then to Grand Rapids, assuming he progresses as planned.

That and the prior CHI/CAR trade (Teraveinen, Bickel) cost UND Nick Schmaltz is what I'm thinking. There's a center and two wing slot.

Today, no, but in two years I'm thinking Schmaltz may have you forgetting about Shaw.

Aren't those throwbacks? Thought they have worn those as a 3rd jersey in recent years

They might have been, but from what I saw those are the new every day getups.

Change can be good. In any event, it's inevitable. But it's always tough when the change comes too soon -- whether at the NCAA or NHL level.

Reflecting on earlier Blackhawk personnel losses, no one "has me forgetting" about Bolland and Frohlik. Both of those players had great value in terms of their specific skill sets and team chemistry. I put Shaw in that category.

Other 3rd/4th line forwards have been more readily replaced. It's also true that when a guy has played a key role in Cup wins, there's a risk that sentimentality will lead one to overestimate his value going forward. But even with those factors in mind, my position is that Shaw's departure is a big loss; a loss that goes well beyond his production numbers.

Still, I don't mean to express skepticism about any player soon to arrive.
