I don't quite understand ESPN taking the World Cup. Do they actually want to get back into hockey, or do they just want to take attention away from NBC and FOX after the soccer wars?

Yes.

It's a test for them to see if hockey can draw eyeballs to ESPN. If it can, then they will get back into hockey. At the same time, they are thrilled to take this gem away from NBC who would happily promote NBC's prime time lineup during the games as well as turning this into a showcase event for NBCSN.

What? We have a hockey channel. It's NBCSN. We don't want ESPN touching it. It's bad enough they do the NCAA tourney.

I wonder if E$PN will attempt a PPV for the World Cup? They're doing it for the cricket WC and that has a much smaller target audience in the USA than hockey.

Totally different situations. Cricket has long been PPV in the US because it's likely that no one will sponsor it. I can't imagine it's advertiser-friendly. The target audience is comprised of wealthy people from England and the Commonwealth who know and miss the game - not a very sizable audience.

Very advertiser friendly - a 1 minute break every 6 balls thrown (every 2 - 3 minutes) and a longer break when a batter is retired (max 10 per team). Then there are drinks breaks.

And its not just wealthy people.

It's not like ESPN has some vendetta against hockey. They basically built their network on hockey. But it's a business, not a charity, and the NHL's ratings are terrible. Olympic hockey drew great numbers and there's profit to be made so ESPN is interested.

Ya cricket is "the people's" game. Not the wealthy game.

The Panthers have a sense of humor about their backup goalie situation

The winner of the contest not only gets to sign a one-day contract, but receives tickets to Panther home games for the remainder of the season.

Attending Panther home games: reward or punishment?

This season? It could be a lot worse - they're actually 2-3 pts out of the wildcard spot currently occupied by the Bruins.

If Florida made the playoffs would anyone in Miami even notice?
