NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

He's a beast in the post season. I disagree. I'm bummed.

Idk... 34 points in 67 games while getting to play top line minutes isn't all that impressive.

For being a "man-child," he isn't all that physical either.

He's replaceable imo and even if he wasn't, no way in the world is he worth 6.5 for 6 years.

That would absolutely sink the Hawks and not allow us to re-sign Teuvo, Seabs, etc, etc..

New York Post reports that the Arizona Coyotes are moving to Vegas after this season.
http://nypost.com/2015/06/30/arizona-coyotes-to-move-to-las-vegas-under-new-owner/

The NHL is arranging the sale of the Arizona Coyotes to billionaire William Foley who will move the team to Las Vegas giving it its first major professional franchise, one source said.

“Las Vegas has reached 10,000 season ticket deposits,” enough to justify a franchise, the other source said.

Foley said in January that he needed 10,000 ticket deposits to get an NHL team.

Foley will move them for the 2016-17 season, the source said. The Post last year was the first to report Foley was backing a Vegas franchise.

The NHL denied the story.

Foley and Roustan did not return calls.

Gut feeling: It ain't happening. Not like this story reports. Look for Vegas to be an expansion team, with the (cursed?) Coyotes moved elsewhere.

And full meltdown ensues on Chicago's hfBoards page. :D
Until people found out that he was asking for 6.5 for 6 years.
Magic Bubble Bursts X 3
Inevitable with the salary cap, but still disheartening. :(

I am forced to agree with your cost/benefit analysis, however.

Saad is overrated.
Good player with potential but having watched him the past 3 seasons, is invisible a lot of games.

Is Saad some sort of defensive force? Because offensively he's like the 12th most dangerous forward on Chicago.
My take is that he was quite valuable as a supporting actor among the top six forwards. He accepted his specific role and performed it well. Hate to see that good chemistry tampered with.

But is he ready to play the leading man? The Blue Jackets must think so; I have my doubts. The Columbus media, FWIW, is calling for celebration.

Quick Tangent: It will be strange and fascinating to have a ringside seat to see how the experiment works out. I'll allow that I hope Saad prospers here. Although the CBJ never really had a chance to supplant my "first love," I do have a secondary rooting interest in them. Certainly it's the team of choice among the neighborhood kids, as it should be. For me personally, the CBJ's move East was a godsend. It's difficult-to-impossible to have a secondary rooting interest when the two teams are in the same division.

But back to the subject at hand. I was caught off-guard by the trade, having bought into the public statements that Saad was part of our long term plan. On the emotional level, I can't help it: I'm disappointed to see him go.

Still, if the alternative was an unmatchable offer sheet and losing the player without compensation, the trade needed to happen. I'll file it away as the lesser of the evils.

I love Saad as a player but in no way shape or form is he worth anywhere near 6 years at 6.5 million per.

I'd pay him 4-5 tops.

Such is the good life in a very poor UFA market this summer. The few decent/good players are in high demand.

Note, this will (again) be the reason the GM's tout at the lockout in X years.

Phil to Pittsburgh.

Doing the happy dance!!! :D

Also liking the Leafs signing Matt Hunwick.

Bucci tweeting that Eichel signed with the Sabers.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Toronto also getting a 1st it sounds, Pittsburgh might be getting a 2nd. Details still flowing in.

Scott Harrington, Kapanan and Nick Spaling plus 2016 1st rounder. Pens get Phil and 2nd round pick they gave up to get Daniel Winnick

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Sharks sign Paul Martin in this year's effort to be relevant after last season's self destruction.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Leafs get Pens' 1st & 3rd round picks next year and retain 15% of Phil's salary
Pitt's 2016 1st is lottery protected. If they get the golden card, they keep it and TML gets the 2017 1st round pick.
