Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

You just have issues with all things Arizona, eh? Rarely do the Coyotes get enough notice for anyone to have developed such a dislike for them as you've managed.

I used to not mind the Coyotes. The dislike of them developed in these playoffs.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

If the Coyotes can keep this up Quebec will have a good team in a couple years.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found here, the updated (after 5/22) most likely outcomes are:

LAK in 5 (100%)
NYR in 6 (31.1%)

Overall winning probabilities:
PHX 0.00% - LAK 100.0%
NYR 58.6% - NJD 41.4%

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Remarks: The team that was among the least likely to make the Cup finals (if not the least likely, given the road they took) has done just that.

Next Round possibilities:
Code:
-------------------
| S | ECF |
| C |-----------|
| F | NYR | NJD |
|-----------------|
|A|LAK|58.6%|41.4%|
-------------------

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? How many goals can a team score by flinging the puck toward the net and getting lucky bounces?

They should add to all playoff suspensions that your name is off the Cup without an appeal. Watch those suckers clean their game up in .22 seconds.

Rangers finally woke up but was it too late?

They weren't short of chances between Gaborik missing the wide open net as well as staal's shot.

I like that idea, though it's the kind of thing that everyone would flip out about because it's do harsh. Maybe if it were limited to multi-game suspensions.

Edit: Keith Jones is right that the Rangers seem to be looking for penalties. It's especially bad when you consider that the one immutable law of hockey is that the Devils will get away with almost everything. It doesn't generally lead so directly to a goal as Gionta high-sticking Stepan in the face, though.

I'm not convinced that that's not a kick. :o

Agreed.

If this game was in NJ, I'd be madder how this game is turning, but for right now I'm just a little peeved.

It was almost certainly a kick. However, the Devils first goal (Gionta) should never have happened, so I suppose the game is where it should be...a one goal lead for New Jersey.

Nice dive by Prust.

Could someone get Pete DeBoer some Clearasil? He's too old to have acne.

Edit to add: And in the interest of being an equal opportunity offender, could someone get John Tortorella some valium?

I want to elaborate on something I said earlier. The Devils should in no way be ashamed of the fact that they've put the puck on net and gotten good outcomes as a result. It's basically the oldest saying in hockey that when you shoot at the net, good things happen (or endless variations of the same). Hey, I'm happy that the Rangers have started doing more of the same (though I'm endlessly frustrated at how bad the Rangers' defensemen's shooting is at times). It's just frustrating when it keeps happening, series after series.

That's boarding but it's no worse than what was done to Richards earlier in the game.

jmh: I know your emotions are running high right now, and I'm in the same company. Others just have to factor that in on our comments. ;)

Exactly! I'm about ready to call up Time Warner cable and start yelling at the CSR who answers because my cable modem has been spotty tonight.

You know what my favorite thing is about tonight's game so far? No Milbury.
