The Devils took advantage of the fact that the game was very loosely called and that officials are reluctant to "decide a game" by calling too many penalties (but much less reluctant to have the same impact by letting things go) to play a dirty, cynical style built around the knowledge that they would get away with many of the infractions they committed, which resulted in rules changes and re-emphasis on stricter enforcement once more teams followed suit.It's just that the "NJ ruined* hockey 17 years ago and I'm still mad about it" angle is old and tired. And yes, I'm venting a bit.
*NJ didn't ruin hockey. They played within the rules. Hate the game, not the playa.
