NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Sam Bradford is in for 6 yrs, $78 mil. Things should start to fall into line now.

God there needs to be a rookie cap.

Yep, I would put it at 16 million for 2 years. More than enough for a guy thats been living at college to live off of, and prove he's worthy of the League. And it doesn't tie anchors around teams when they sign top guys who end up to be busts.... Might also spread the wealth down the rounds a little as well.

I'd think 3 or 4 years would be ideal. If the contracts remain non-guaranteed, then any players who don't work out can be cut. Maybe some kind of cap on guaranteed money too, I don't know.

it doesnt even make sense that he has already doubled the guaranteed money of alex smith who was the first round pick in 05 or 06... that isnt exactly inflationary adjustments

$13 mil a year for a player who's never played in the NFL and could be a total bust? Makes perfect sense. :p

Don't worry. You'll be giving up a year of football in part for a rookie cap. Rejoice!

Caps are for losers with no self control. If Bradford sucks the Rams are simply dooming themselves to failure out of their own incompetence.

If I were the commish I would like to see it for the reasons mentioned below, "we don't need our worst teams tying up huge % of their salary on one player who may bust or get hurt". The league benefits from parity and keeping teams out of the basement forever. Some just have more steps to climb to get out.:-)

My pitch the the NFLPA would be "spread it around", same total cap but add a rookie cap... less for the rookies and more for the guys who have been there a while. The only people who would vote against that would be the guys in the draft each year, who don't have a NFLPA vote yet.

I'm DEFINITELY in favor of this. A rookie cap would definitely be a good thing.

On a separate note:

What about a similar similar to hockey where these high profile players have a rookie cap but after that first salary is up, the drafting team has first crack at re-signing him exclusively or they can choose to trade those rights to another team? Kindof like the Restricted Free Agency thing?

Maybe that's stupid but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Could let them have that option as well, say maybe 18 million for 3 years. That might work a little better for guys who are deamed to be projects, like QB's or guys moving to a new position from what they played in College perhaps. Less money per year, but more of a chance to hang around.

That would be the way I would do it.

If so, the Vikings are toast, absent a major move for a viable QB. But such is the gambling you entail with Favre.

Dan Patrick said that maybe Kurt Warner would come back if he could play for the Vikings and replace Favre...

We're about due for another stint of Brad Johnson. I really want my jersey to be relevant again.

I hope no one actually believes he's done, this will drag out for at least 3 more weeks, probably more. :p

Roll your eyes, but better Warner than TSuck.

Even with your D and your tools on offense, you're no better than a 9-7 team and a first round exit with TSuck. Then again, what's the record for the most handoffs to a running back in one season? Without Favre, the Vikings may break that record. :D
