NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

If the NFL was smart, they would foster this to be the feeder league for players who hate college- as you can go to the XFL out of HS. It's certainly not going to threaten the NFL nor NCAA, that's for sure.

That was pretty much what the AAF was trying to position itself to be, but it takes 3 to 5 years to develop an established base and start turning a profit. NFL didn't bite on a deal with AAF because of that.

That's true- but they really didn't have a business plan to sustain a league. Seems like this version of the XFL (which is a dumb name, considering the changes they have made) planned for audiences of up to 15k, and moderate TV audiences. And instead of front loading fans with hype, they seem to be looking to back load with the quality of play. That was not inept football at all. Not great, for sure. But the players that the NFL didn't give a chance to really took their opportunity. So far, at least.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

Just use a 7 team step-ladder bracket and be done with it. The NFL gets the benefit of being relevant for 4 more weeks :p

Not to mention...

...while the regular season would be increased to 17 games per team and the preseason shortened to three games per team, sources said.

So only one team with a bye. I would make things a bit less interesting in Week 18 if a team has #1 locked up, but I suppose it could be more interesting if #7 is up for grabs.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

Is this going to extend the season? Meaning - will the Super Bowl now be the second weekend of February?

The extra RS game replaces a pre-season game, and the number of rounds stays the same, so no change in season length.
We will obviously eventually get to 16 teams in the playoffs; they're just boiling the frog.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

More under .500 teams in the playoffs!

If the number of divisions stays the same that won't happen. Under .500 teams only make it when they win a division.

Now, once they go to 50% of teams making the playoffs the bottom WC teams will approach 8-8 and yes, eventually if there's a big conference imbalance we'll get a sub-.500 WC team.

I think in the playoffs teams should begin with a lead of one point per each RS win more than their opponent.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

You know, with everyone yammering on about making the day after the Super Bowl a holiday, they should just move it to the Sunday of Presidents Day Weekend. Seems like they're heading that way anyway.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

This ended up being prescient:

Dan Patrick: With the first nine months of the Baseketball postseason out of the way, the playoff picture is starting to emerge.

Kenny Mayne: So, with last night's victory over Boston, next week the Milwaukee Beers must beat Indianapolis in order to advance to Charlotte. That's in an effort to reduce their magic number to three.

Dan Patrick: Right, and then the Beers can advance to the National Eastern Division North to play Tampa.

Kenny Mayne: So, if the Beers beat Detroit and Denver beats Atlanta in the American Southwestern Division East Northern, then Milwaukee goes to the Denslow Cup, unless Baltimore can upset Buffalo and Charlotte ties Toronto, then Oakland would play LA and Pittsburgh in a blind choice round robin. And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, a two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

Re: NFL 2019-20: The Patriots Are A Terrible 11-3 Team!

NFL offered 1.5% revenue split raise (to 48.5%) in exchange for extra game and more playoff teams? Bold move cotton!

So with 17 games I can’t believe they would allow teams to get an extra home game and win a playoff spot. So does each team have one neutral site game? London, Mexico, Lagos, etc?

That would be awesome

Wow. Aren't most votes like 90/10?

Just this coming November for 4 more years ;)

The Society of Nigerian Uncles is sponsoring the game in Lagos.
