New Jersey is for people who can't make it in New York. Massachusetts is for people who can't make it in New Jersey.

Seriously, I've lived in two of them and spent time in the third and I can't tell you the difference, except each of them is actually two states: an aggressively vile urban one and an obnoxiously stupid rural one. But, yeah, you're going to find mostly as-sholes, no argument.

I lived upstate NY for a while (glances at RPI Masters on wall to left). That assessment is fairly accurate.

There were rural folk in Saratoga and Schenectady and Fulton and Warren Counties that were backwards beyond my rural ND upbringing. But then there was NYC.

Thing is the same "two states in one" argument could be made out here lately. Most of Wisconsin is not Madison; most of Minnesota (outstate) is not MSP metro; and, believe it or not, even ND is getting a bit that way with Fargo trying to be MSP-lite versus not Cass County ND*.


*I suspect ND may soon become "east of I29 / west of I29" as Grand Forks becomes larger.

It's probably true of everywhere. Perhaps the exception is the states where the "city" is a joke (VT, WV, WY, ME, DE, MT, ND, NH). In those places the pseudo-city could be, dare I say, pleasant and fairly intelligent, especially if it is dominated by a university.

Geographically sure, but roughly 60% of the state lives in the Twin Cities metro.

According to this only 7% of MN pop lives in Minneapolis. The extended SMSA can be very deceptive.

Wait, wait, wait. Are you folks trying to say there is not something disturbingly different about people from Minnesota--those long forearms and large, protruding brows?? Just because they're nice on matters unrelated to hockey doesn't mean they can't handle the truth.

The "two states in one" argument is more about political POV.

Those in the urban areas do not see the world the same way as the folks in the rural areas and vice versa. Their particular wants and needs from society (be it government or neighbors) are very different.

Case in point: Refugee resettlement (Trump's EO where counties have to approve) is readily approved by metro MSP counties; meanwhile Beltrami Co (MN) passed a "nope" position. Same state, 250 miles apart, light years away.

I understand that, and by the more accurate measure 73% of Minnesotans live in an urban area. We are in violent agreement.

Same. Depends upon which Vikings team shows up. They can play with SF but will they get outcoached? If the Vikings can gameplan against their fierce DL they have a chance.

SF could come out and lay an egg. Then the Vikes will not capitalize and squeek out a close loss.

Seems to me if the Niners get Cousins out of his comfort zone early, it could get ugly.

Yeah, Thielen and Cousins really seem to communicate well on the field, which will be a big deal, with the pressure SF's d-line and linebackers can bring.
