NFL 2017: With Dollar Signs in Goodell's Eyes

I'd agree. BTW, for those who don't know, the USFL won their case, and were awarded $1. Yes, one single greenback.

$3. It was an antitrust case, so by law damages were automatically tripled.

Oh, and the USFL owner that pushed the case to try to go toe to toe with the NFL? He moved into a nice house in Washington DC last I heard.

That’s a thing?

The USFL was the XFL. Also there were THREE "World Football Leagues" IIRC. Two failed miserably. The other sorta became a developmental league for the NFL, I honestly don't know if they are still around.

Re: NFL 2017: With Dollar Signs in Goodell's Eyes

I had never heard of that law.

Obviously I have heard of the USFL Brent. :D

You're a bit younger, didn't know if you knew the details. :o

And yeah, that was a HUGE case. And a very corrupt one, from my POV. The NFL had their way with the USFL. At least they used vaseline.

Edit: Put on your tinfoil hats: it's a reason Trump went after the NFL. He's still bitter about the USFL. :D Have fun, kids....

He's even more bitter about getting outbid for the Bills.

I think they got interest, too, of something like $0.12. The scene in the ESPN 30 For 30 on the USFL, when the interviewer hands Trump the uncashed check from that victory is priceless.

Re: NFL 2017: With Dollar Signs in Goodell's Eyes

Vince McMahon sells $100 million of WWE stock to invest in football-related enterprise, and files for various trademarks (story on ESPN website).

Will we see the XFL rise again?

Some interesting speculation in the comments to the ESPN story.

That whole episode was tremendous.

Worked great last time. Wait, no. The opposite of that.

I will say this about the XFL, it had a few things I liked:
—Whatever the **** you wanted on your jersey. Let these people have some personality. As a bonus, when you have a player that gets a new nickname, you can sell a **** ton of New Jersey’s to the meatheads.
—The in-huddle camera. This was obviously carried on by the nfl.
—Call me infantile, but I liked the scramble for the ball instead of a kickoff.

All of the rest kind of sucked.

Re: NFL 2017: With Dollar Signs in Goodell's Eyes

If I was running the XFL

Hashmarks go back to where they were in the 60s.
Down by contact doesn't exist. All tackles must be via a player wrapped up and brought to the ground, out of bounds, or via a give up.
Holding is from spot of foul.
An illegal block in the back must be within 10 yards of the ball carrier.
The ground can cause a fumble
The completed pass rule goes back to the 60s.
Overtime - each team gets two NCAA like possessions. Must go for 2 after a TD. If tied after 2 possessions each, the game is a tie.

Yes. Make field goals fun again.

No. Just asking for more injuries.

Holding is from spot of foul.

Wait? It isn't?

An illegal block in the back must be within 10 yards of the ball carrier.

How about holds, too? Make returns fun again.

The ground can cause a fumble

Yes.

The completed pass rule goes back to the 60s.

Please be more specific.

No. Go to NC$$ rules. It's the one thing they do right.

My additional rule: timeouts reduced from 3 to 1 per half.

Offensive holding is 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, or 10 yards from the spot of the foul if it happens down field and certain other criteria are met. I don't recall all the details at the moment.

I guess I always thought it was spot of the foul because offense holding is almost always at the line.
