Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?
Well, I know that rule. It was a play where the quarterback was getting wrapped up and yanked his arm to try to get the ball away, but when he released it stuck on his hand through the follow through and went slightly backwards to the side of him. You'd think it would be an obvious fumble, but they brought in the 'rules expert' who said it was going to be incomplete because the arm was in a forward motion so it didn't matter where the ball went. The announcers just let him talk and you could tell they had a "This dude may be a former ref but he has no clue what's he's talking about" tone and kind of brushed it to the side. Yet, that's exactly what happened following review, incomplete pass. Made zero sense.
If the lateral goes forward, not a fumble. For laterals, it's the path of the ball. It's f'ed up, and I relate it to the "break the plane" rule for TDs.
