NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Well, speak, then.

The NFL can choose to listen or not. But I'm sure many will think about listening to people who want an entertainer to entertain for their fantasy entertainment vs. physical volence people.

The NFL isn't covering the criminal side of this, and governments do have the obligation to investigate something based off of public demand- they are based on the public, afterall. But for criminal justice, there are very specific items that must be met before even going to court, and there, there is a Constitutional obligation of the government to make sure that basic rights of the accused are met.

Companies also have contracts that must be held to, which is why the players union is protesting Ray Rice's punishment. Do they have a point? Dunno- I've not read the contract. Being that this isn't a criminal thing, ones Rights are not totally applicable.

And in this case- who's Rights are being trampled on? None, that I can see. Fantasy football isn't a right- it's entertainment.

Which is different than how a private company has to do things to either fire or suspend an employee.
My question relating to fantasy football owners was more rhetorical than anything. My point was why do we always just go the way of the loudest voices? I just tired of living in a country where it seems like so many decisions are made by holding your finger up to see which way the wind is blowing.

Make a decision. Make a decision that is backed up by the facts, and makes sense. Then stick with it. By changing your mind in the face of public outcry, you just encourage more public outcry the next time.

Don't get me wrong. I'd be saying the same thing if the Vikings had simply announced from the beginning they were suspending him until the final outcome in the criminal proceedings, but then reversed course because Reverand Al or a bunch of angry Vikings fans showed up and demanded his immediate reinstatement. Jeesus people, just show some backbone once in awhile.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Anyway, if the NFL is going to be disciplining players for domestic violence, what about owners? league employees? employees of teams who aren't players? should all of these people also be held to similar standards as well?

No. There is a different standard for the employees that are public faces of the organization (players, coaches, etc) than for people that are not the public face. If a team wants to suspend someone behind the scenes for something, then so be it, but that would be completely up to them. And this is they way it should be. Being the public face of the organization means that you will be held to a higher standard, because you represent more than just yourself, as an individual.
Hard to figure anyone is a bigger "face" of the Cowboys right now than Jerry Jones.

I have a friend who works in the HR department for a telecom. She's in charge of the local installers and repairmen, you know, the people driving around the vans and trucks with the company's name on the sides. She got herself into a nice jam, ended up with a DUI, and we were talking about it. She felt like a complete hypocrite because it was her job to fire any installer who the company learned got a DUI while she was able to keep her job. In the end, companies should not necessarily hold all employees to the same standard. In the department I work, I have a flexible start time while the group I support does not. I have a laptop to do some work from home while others do not. Some divisions have their breakroom pantries stocked of various food, mine doesn't. There is no blanket treatment for all employees.

Hmm....so you'd have a uniform higher standard for pro athletes in any of the five major sports leagues then?

it's probably a tangent now, but the way things are going in our society, I wonder how soon until we have a big-time spousal abuse case between a gay or lesbian couple??

Well, generally, we are a democracy. Until that starts to invade on specified rights, then we are a republic. So as long as the crowd isn't invading on those rights, the majority does rule.

this isn't about what is the best mix of metals to use in a catalytic converter, this is about what the public thinks of a certain punishment. And that is constantly about "public outcry" and the masses- since most penalties and basic laws only need a majority vote in a house of congress.

That's what this country is. Not sure what to suggest if you don't like that.

well, I was not counting the WNBA, but I could make it 6 if you'd prefer.....;)

I'd say MLS attendance and TV coverage have advanced its prominence to the point where it can now stand alongside the traditional 4.....

Generally, non-player employees have less protection than the players. Absent a collective bargaining agreement (which the players have) or a disproportionate effect on a protected class, an NFL team could fire an employee for taking too many napkins in the company cafeteria.

At this point, the cast of the Big Bang Theory may have a better shot of scoring on the Falcons than the Bucs do.
