Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?
Domestic abuse has not only been swept under the rug by the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB. etc.. but society in general. And the legal system is not immune. You very rarely hear about this until someone dies or is horribly beaten.Years ago the late Farah Faucett starred in "The Burning Bed" when after years of abuse the wife finally took action. The Rice case, "a first offense", is receiving tremendous attention because of the fame of the perpetrator, delayed release of a video and the bungling of the NFL.
Let me relate 2 incidents:
1. While lunching with 6 other women, all bank middle managers, five (5) of the 6 admitted to being abused by former boyfriends or ex-husbands. Bruises, Black Eyes, Broken Bones. Thank God "former and ex" were the operative words. This problem has been hidden for far too long.
2. A few years ago, in my neighborhood, a couple had 3 incidents when police were called. Twice the man was arrested and once the woman. The most onerous punishment was anger management (paid for by the offender). court costs and/or a fine, and a year's probation. No jail time; no loss of job.
The Point: This issue is Prevalent in society and Symptomatic of the way the legal system deals with this issue.
The Rice incident and video will bring the issue of domestic abuse to the forefront, at least for the short term.
