Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Domestic abuse has not only been swept under the rug by the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB. etc.. but society in general. And the legal system is not immune. You very rarely hear about this until someone dies or is horribly beaten.Years ago the late Farah Faucett starred in "The Burning Bed" when after years of abuse the wife finally took action. The Rice case, "a first offense", is receiving tremendous attention because of the fame of the perpetrator, delayed release of a video and the bungling of the NFL.

Let me relate 2 incidents:

1. While lunching with 6 other women, all bank middle managers, five (5) of the 6 admitted to being abused by former boyfriends or ex-husbands. Bruises, Black Eyes, Broken Bones. Thank God "former and ex" were the operative words. This problem has been hidden for far too long.

2. A few years ago, in my neighborhood, a couple had 3 incidents when police were called. Twice the man was arrested and once the woman. The most onerous punishment was anger management (paid for by the offender). court costs and/or a fine, and a year's probation. No jail time; no loss of job.

The Point: This issue is Prevalent in society and Symptomatic of the way the legal system deals with this issue.
The Rice incident and video will bring the issue of domestic abuse to the forefront, at least for the short term.

I've known 1-2 women who were at least threatened with physical abuse (so, mental abuse), and a couple that were very abused mentally. It's never pretty. It usually is so gradual that it becomes "normal" to them, while to the rest of us...we wonder how could they not see that happening?

The following clip from Breaking Bad is a very minor spoiler, if it's a spoiler at all, but it very topical in this case (and pure great acting, I might add; never get tired of watching this scene for that particular quality):

It's my understanding most police can now press charges of domestic abuse and don't need the victim to do it. That's a good idea. Although it doesn't always work. Like when the offender is a former all pro running back, pitchman for a car rental company, TV analyst and "actor," as we've seen.

That was, what? 20 years ago? Now the verdict would be different - we hope.

IIRC the authorities did a pretty good job. The DA's office was deficient.

The police can press charges, but if the victim refuses to testify....and in most cases a spouse can't be forced to testify.

It has been swept under the rug. Like I stated before, my wife and I had to help her close friend that was mentally abusive. My wife also dealt with it with one of her ex's. He hit her once and she knocked him on his butt. She told him that she'd take him out and then call her 350+ pound brothers to "take care of it."

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

One's a prison guard that picked up the back end of my wife's car... by himself. The other is a lumberjack.

I'm 6'2" 165. With steel-toes. The others involved? All at least 6'5"/250. They didn't dare. Total posers.

It's my understanding that, where we live, police are required to charge someone if they are called to intervene in a domestic violence situation, even if neither party wants them to.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Misplaced outrage, imho.

I could care a less whether Goodell keeps his job. Sports league commissioners fall into the useless category in terms of benefit to society. It's like getting worked up over who should be on the cover of Madden.

If we assume KO and others succeed in their soapbox charade and get the commissioner fired, what have they accomplished? Nothing. Will domestic violence stop, or even be reduced? Will the NFL or others now "take it more seriously" (it amuses me to no end when people say this)?

If Keith really wanted to take a stand, he should go on tv each night and call out Ray Rice. Call out the chicken**** "men" around this country who commit domestic violence on a daily basis.

Roger Goodell is a figurehead. He's a little deer trophy KO is trying to mount on his wall to justify his otherwise meaningless existence.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

plenty of fans still wearing rice shirts. i guess if they can support ray lewis they can support anybody.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Interesting that the Ravens are playing Pittsburgh tonight. I haven't been watching but has there been any mention of Big Ben's past history of sexual assault or attempted rape or whatever violence against women he committed was?

Not that I've heard. Although he was never convicted, so technically he's innoc---I mean, not guilty.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

it's really gotten to the point where we need to put flags on these guys. didnt think either of those were penalties.
