Ex-Vikings safety Orlando Thomas dies at 37 of ALS

The Minnesota Vikings say former Vikings strong safety Orlando Thomas has died after suffering from Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The team says Thomas died early Wednesday at age 37. He began feeling symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2004, and the disease was diagnosed in 2007.

Thomas was a hard hitter whose 22 career interceptions rank seventh in franchise history. He had 32 total takeaways in 98 games, from 1995-2001 after being drafted by the Vikings in the second round out of Southwest Louisiana.

The Vikings plan to honor Thomas with a moment of silence before their next home game, on Nov. 15 against the Detroit Lions.

Ex-Viking safety Orlando Thomas is still fighting ALS

Former Vikings All-Pro safety Orlando Thomas, who has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease for five years, has not died as has been reported, said his agent, Mark Bartelstein, who spoke to the family this evening.

“It’s not true,” Bartelstein said. “He’s still fighitng as hard as ever. I don’t know anybody to fight a disease or illness the way he has fought this. He’s continuing to fight the fight and is cheering on the Vikings every day.”

The Vikings reported Thomas’ death on their Web site this evening.

“Somebody put it on their Myspace page down in Crowley, La., and I guess the local media ran with it or something,” Bartelstein said. “You know how in today’s world once rumors start, it spreads like wildfire. You know how people communicate nowadays. But it’s totally false. He’s sick, but he’s good and and he’s fighting the battle he fights every day.”

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

Good stance of fans of crappy teams, and kind of a cheap shot, too. ;)

Courtesy of Page 2 c/o ESPN:

All joking aside, I love the Browns. They cause me near-constant frustration and heartache, but that's the price you pay when you become attached to a pro sports team to which you have only an imaginary philosophical connection. I won't bail and support another team just because mine sucks, only to come back once we experience a modicum of success. What do I look like, a Patriots fan?

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

From my FFL league site....in reference to Thomas Jones this year.....and I'm sure it was stolen from somewhere, sometime.....:

Its the old Rueben metaphor:
You're at the restaurant and you see the rueben on the menu, but you know its unhealthy and for one reason or another you talk yourself out of it. Then your friend swoops in and orders it, and when it arrives and you see him enjoying it you think to yourself, "What was I thinking passing on the rueben? I knew better!"

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

I went through with the trade of Jared Allen and Nicks for Marion Barber and Marshawn Lynch.

Time will tell if I made the right call.

Going up a team with Peyton Manning this week. Hoping he has a poor week.

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

The odds are against you. It doesn't matter the stats of the last 2, 3, um....since he entered the league.......odds are against you. ;)

And the team I'm playing just traded Philip Rivers for Andre Johnson and Anquan Boldin.

Yeah, I'm protesting that one.

The guy getting Rivers already has Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez...he's the commish so it will still go through.

Boldin is dinged up and Andre hasn't done crap all year (and last I heard he's injured, and was in the hospital, although he may have been released now)

Johnson is injured? That would suck for my team, I'll have to choose between Sidney Rice and Johnny Knox to replace him....

He has a chest contusion, and again, I dunno if he was released from the hospital or not. He was there as of Sunday night into Monday morning. I'd dig around for an update.

Bill Simmons.

Thank you. I figured that was where it was from, but didn't know for sure.

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

Need to start 3 of Johnny Knox, Austin Collie, Eddie Royal, Chester Taylor, and Visanthe Shiancoe...

We do get yardage points and it's 6 all around for TD's...

I would start Collie and Thundercok. After that? I dunno.

Collie looks to be Peyton's secondary target now, after he realized that if he worked at it, he could overtake Garcon. And BrettFavre's style means Thundercok is always a target.

Re: NFL 2009 Thread #2

Ok, here's a (maybe) tough one, since Boldin is hurt, but dunno if he's starting/playing:

REC TD's = 3. Yardage is 3 pts for the first 100, 2 pts for every 50 after that. We start 3 WR/TE (no specific TE position).

Gimme the three:

Larry Fitzgerald
Owen Daniels
Steve Smith (NYG)
Steve Breaston
Lance Moore
Pierre Garcon

I have my 3 in mind, but would like to hear a view from an outsider or three.

Edit: for the record, I traded for Fitz 2 weeks ago, and picked up Breaston week 2 for future use....drafted the rest. Doesn't matter, really, but the lineup does seem odd at first glance.
