Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

no. no we didn't fail. we played (almost) two periods of really good hockey. then got totally outplayed in the third. we still look better than last year.

(and, hey, it only took one beer to maintain this optomistic attitude)

It's true, we do look better than last year, and I'm optimistic that tD's signature will have at least twice the number of wins. But, it frustrates me when I see an obviously far-more-capable team develop a two goal lead, then pee it away by trying to sit on it for the rest of the game. If all hockey games were only a period and a half long, we'd be National Champions.

I'll have nightmares for a long time about Robo coming out of the net. it was one of those slo mo things, where you have time to see the disaster unfolding right before your eyes.

Misfits were great, as always.

12th place. I'm calling it.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Well don't forget the coaches objective is for the team to play it's best hockey in March.
Still certainly I ******* hate to lose.! It just sticks in my craw.
I like how we come out and I have no problem with the system, but we have to do a better job in it. We cannot be giving up goals one minute from the end of a period. And we have to focus better. That's the time to redouble the efforts, not sit back. The tying goal was tough to swallow and their 3ed even tougher. We almost had the momentum stopped and we got that penalty and set them up from there.

They just have to keep getting better is all.

Getting some points this weekend would be a really good thing.
I have us 7th if we are lucky, 8th if not. Just based on how good we really are vs how good the competition really is.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

well tonight was a better game really. 3 of the 4 umd goals were either on the 5 min major or the back to back 5x3's. Tech has addressed a number of the things that were hurting them. Faceoffs were real good, they didn't give up very many odd man rushes or hang the goalie out to dry. Let's hope olson is going to be all right, losing him would really hurt.
I think our guys are continuing to learn. Getting points next weekend is critical. penalty minutes tonight 143 to tech-4 for umd. Not sure this was indicative of the play, pretty sure it wasn't.
We still have to do a better job of taking advantage of our chances. Too many missed nets, etc.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Well, 4 losses in a row, it'll be nice to go back home.

Tech played physical but just lost it there in the 2nd. Penalties did us in. You can't give UMD a 5 min PP and two 5x3s and think you might win. There's no excuse for the two 5x3s, just dumb penalties.

Jamie's postgame thoughts, it was pretty short:
Down to 9 forwards, the guys in the 3rd period did a terrific job
UMD's got a good PP, we put ourselves in bad positions
Penalty Minutes were 134 to 4, bad position to be in
Brett got hit with a puck, no idea about status, he's getting checked out
Dirk thought Holmberg did okay taking draws in the 3rd period, Jamie reiterated that all 9 forwards did a good job, played very well in the 3rd
Thought we did some good things, we missed the net after rebounds too much

PIM 134 to 4. With that much time on the PK, and the guys who got injured/kicked out, I'm guessing it was a miracle that we kept it within two.

Jon Campion is gay! ;)

We have Minnesota and a struggling CC team headed up to Houghton for our next two series. I'd better see at least two wins in that span.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

we could have beat the Bulldogs, but you can't beat the refs too. the guys looked good, played good, our coaches are just fine and not going anywhere. this was an absolute abortion of reffing. are these guys actually being paid to do this? our guy skates in WITH THE PUCK and they call icing? Royer gets a penalty WHILE SITTING ON THE BENCH? Kattelus steps up to help his goalie and IS THROWN OUT OF THE GAME? Duluth can scream at the refs, kick the puck, push the ref and what? nothing. abomination of reffing. I'm getting madder by the minute.
our guys played real well and can be proud. they looked real good out there. if there had been actual refs at the game it might have been different.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

All the hope and expectations early this season were so precious :) Welcome back to reality, friends

Didn't Duluth hang a snowman on us in the Saturday game at the DECC last year?

Progress. Hard to win games when it sounds like the Bulldogs smuggled some halos out of Grand Forks last weekend. ;)

57 minutes ??!!??!! Duluth gets 4 penalties and complained about every single one. d^mmit!

Connolly didn't touch your goalie *******. And he wasn't kicked out for knocking him down, he was kicked out for pulling a mcsorley and after he was down cross checking him again. This isn't AHL hockey. This is NCAA. And you can't cross check a guy in the face, thats an auto 5 and out. They were legit calls. Not to mention right before he got kciked out he mugged the guy in front and no call. Your squad sucks, not the refs.

Northern Michigan 0
Michigan Tech (24) 12
- I have seen some math that says that Tech might actually be ahead of Hillsdale with all of the Ranking numbers, but due to the Head-2-Head rule, Hillsdale will be ahead of Tech if they're next to each other in the polls. However with Colorado Mines, another Engineering school, beating Nebraska-Kearney today, it should shake up the numbers enough that Mines or Kearney could be in between Tech and Hillsdale, and thus remove the Head-to-Head jumping that Hillsdale gets to do.

I can't really give you an accurate idea of the numbers right now, mostly thanks to some idiots in Mankato not knowing how to handle some snow on their field. And after the 2005 debacle Tech had at GVSU, I'm pretty upset that they rescheduled the game for tomorrow morning and is playing it at Marshall instead of Mankato to boot. Its not like they're some idiots from Podunk, Alabama, they should know how to handle snow on their playing field.
