Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Well, 4 losses in a row, it'll be nice to go back home.

Tech played physical but just lost it there in the 2nd. Penalties did us in. You can't give UMD a 5 min PP and two 5x3s and think you might win. There's no excuse for the two 5x3s, just dumb penalties.

Jamie's postgame thoughts, it was pretty short:
Down to 9 forwards, the guys in the 3rd period did a terrific job
UMD's got a good PP, we put ourselves in bad positions
Penalty Minutes were 134 to 4, bad position to be in
Brett got hit with a puck, no idea about status, he's getting checked out
Dirk thought Holmberg did okay taking draws in the 3rd period, Jamie reiterated that all 9 forwards did a good job, played very well in the 3rd
Thought we did some good things, we missed the net after rebounds too much

Agree 100%. Have to be more disciplined. this has been a problem for a couple of years now. You just can't mouth off so much, or lose your cool.. Let the coach take care of it..

We have Minnesota and a struggling CC team headed up to Houghton for our next two series. I'd better see at least two wins in that span.
I'd say they need 6 of the 8 points and all 8 would be nice. Going to UNO I don't expect a win.

All the hope and expectations early this season were so precious :) Welcome back to reality, friends

thanks, I think.

we could have beat the Bulldogs, but you can't beat the refs too. the guys looked good, played good, our coaches are just fine and not going anywhere. this was an absolute abortion of reffing. are these guys actually being paid to do this? our guy skates in WITH THE PUCK and they call icing? Royer gets a penalty WHILE SITTING ON THE BENCH? Kattelus steps up to help his goalie and IS THROWN OUT OF THE GAME? Duluth can scream at the refs, kick the puck, push the ref and what? nothing. abomination of reffing. I'm getting madder by the minute.
our guys played real well and can be proud. they looked real good out there. if there had been actual refs at the game it might have been different.

Well campion is reffing more of our games.
We have to not antagonize him any more, even if he did a poor job and caved in to the other sides wishes. I have no problem with some of the calls but the icing hurt us. especially when we touched the puck first and they called it icing anyway, and the delay of game call which wasn't hurt us too. it was at a time when we could have taken the lead.

Connolly didn't touch your goalie *******. And he wasn't kicked out for knocking him down, he was kicked out for pulling a mcsorley and after he was down cross checking him again. This isn't AHL hockey. This is NCAA. And you can't cross check a guy in the face, thats an auto 5 and out. They were legit calls. Not to mention right before he got kciked out he mugged the guy in front and no call. Your squad sucks, not the refs.

everything is legit if it goes your way. And no our squad does not suck.. that's nonsense and you know it.
He was right though on one count, Connally didn't touch the goalie.

Also note the comment from their defenseman after the game. I disagree that trying to slow the game down cost us. I think it was the right tactic. But you have to play smart and we didn't.

Last, I really, really, hope Olson is ok. and any word on schooley, good to hear on baker. we need him.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Sorry for the double post.
I was in Boston last week and took in a game or two.
Did anyone notice just how dominant hockey east has been over the wcha.? Or like last night when Yale demolished CC. Or even quinny beating st cloud.Well this guy and I were chatting and he pointed out, one of the reasons. The good east coast teams are very quick on the counter attack. they absolutely explode down the rink when they get a chance on a turnover. it's an automatic 5x3 for a few seconds, and it pays off. They are very quick, skate well, and move the puck well too.
I would love to see our guys do some of this.

This is the brilliant analysis that keeps me coming back to USCHO every day.

Ylae and Quinnipiac are in HOCKY RAST now? ;)

From all the WCHA hockey I've watched in the last four years, I just don't think the conference is built for a small, quick team to really dominate. CC can do it from time to time, but it's usually been when they've had a dominant goalie. Every season the top WCHA teams have a lot of speed, but they usually have some size to match (NoDak, Duluth, etc).

I thought Hockey East was having a down year. or maybe that's just because NU, UMASS, and UVM are unnaturally horrid, BC is slumping (they pick it up in February and March) and PC is actually winning games.

You are correct that he didn't touch our goalie, however, as a Div 1 hockey player, taunting the opposing goalie after a goal is completely uncalled for, I'm not saying I agree with Kattelus' decision after the goal. Stay classy Connelly.

And as for the penalties, in those couple scrums after the whistle when we went down 5x3, once again I don't agree with out player's decisions, but when Connelly is throwing punches, pushing a ref, and kicking pucks, it's time for the refs to get their heads out of their asses.

There's no way that UMD should've come clean out of those couple piles, and they did.

This about explains our weekend: (2nd goal from Friday night)

you know there is a strong tendency on teams that are struggling to blame the refs. I think it's a mistake. You have to look at yourself and you have to win in spite of the referee's.
It felt, for whatever reason, that they had a better handle on the emotions on saturday and that translated into a better game. I think allowing the ref's to ruin the game for you is similar to losing your cool and allowing someone who is jawing to get you to do something stupid and end up in the box.
besides it sounded like our 5x3 penalty kill needed help.

The refs didn't lose the game for us on Saturday, but I don't agree with how they handled the scrums during the game.

So no more thread locking at 1000 posts with the new board? I thought it was time for Tech Season Thread II

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

the moderators get so fascinated by how witty the Tech fans are and they forget to lock it. yeah, I think that's the reason. :)

I think the thread max must just have gotten raised or is non-existent now

What do you mean? CC is in that spot. You're new territory my friend.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

I'm done spending money to watch this team. That was not Campion's fault. Tech played like ****ing retards. What do you expect is going to happen if you skate out of the box and crosscheck someone in the face 2 seconds later? That has to be a game misconduct! Also, Kattelus getting kicked out was the right call, he ****ing attacked the UMD player and kept hitting him when he was face down on the ice! It was a tie game and Tech ****ed it away with dumb and embarrasing penalties.

The way I see it, you're in new territory. I've been counting our ranking from the bottom for the past 4 years as it takes a lot less effort. So, as usual, We're number 1.
