Sorry if this has been discussed previously but......what is the word on Jordan Baker? I heard rumors he would be back this weekend possibly. Wondering if that is still the case...?

Sure hope he's back to full speed this weekend, otherwise we'll get manhandled by BYE again.

If his ankle sprain did heal up (someone heard it had), it's possible he was again cleared for practice this week (he was skating and shooting prior to the sprain 3.5 weeks ago). We don't play again until a series at Duluth next weekend.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Saw him on campus beginning of last week, he only had a small walking boot on, and it seemed like it was only there to protect it, not so much that it was still injured, I believe he's been cleared for practice this week (but haven't heard any official word), which should make him hopeful for Duluth

Just in case anyone was wondering:
The Copper Kings had more than 32 players on the ice Monday, with three more not on the ice, including their top scorer from last season, Ben Johnson.

Johnson skated earlier this season with the Midget AAA Little Caesars squad, then with the USA National Development Program and lately with the USHL's Fargo Force, with whom he's still rostered.

Johnson will attend practice today and Wednesday before heading out of town to play games for the Force to fill in as several Force players are at a tournament.

After two more weeks in the USHL, Johnson will return for the rest of the season with Calumet, Copper Kings varsity coach Jim Crawford said.

"What he's been through is incredible, especially for a small town like this," said Crawford.

Reserving my excitement for the announcement, then reserving it even further until he plays his first game in a Tech sweater. We all know why.

Also, the BCHL reports Labrecque will be a 2012 recruit.

Fire up! This is the year we beat Brighton and Cranbrook if we keep a pair of D1 recruits on the roster. I might be watching more HS hockey than Tech games. Looks like the best Cal team since '92.
wrong thread?

Holy jeez, didn't even see that. How many bye weeks do you people get in the first few weeks of the season here? I will touch base with you guys next week maybe :)

This is unusual. In fact, after Christmas, I don't believe we get any bye weeks this year. I think it is due to the expansion of the conference, and this is just how the scheduling worked out this season.

It is due to St. Lawrence making a late switch from a series this weekend or last bye week to a January game.

Rumor has it that some good recruiting news might be coming out soon.

Wouldn't happen to be a highly ranked kid from Minn. with family ties to the Copper Country? I heard tech was recruiting this kid really hard.

I also heard (from Mikesch) that tech is putting a lot more emphasis on recruiting Minn. and down state Michigan.

That is a pretty big "if" but always a chance. Brighton only has a few returning players and is in for a big "rebuilding year."

Yes saw the 2012 report on Heisenberg's list last week. We could do with a little good recruiting news. nothing breeds success like success.
Also I think the bye couldn't have come at a better time for us. get some injury's back, and get some practice time to work out some of these issues. I think a plus overall. looking forward to the 13th big time.

I was thinking the exact opposite. Tech played well this weekend and we learned a lot. If we played Wisconsin again this weekend it would be up in the air who would win, even after being swept. They are ready to play but now they have to sit again.

Well said, Though one could argue that with so many freshmen playing important roles, all the time on the practice rink will pay off down the road, as it allows those freshmen to fix things without impacting game results. Personally the faceoffs still need help, and so does the power play, and we need to move the puck much faster. The teams beating the big boys in the WCHA are all puck movement teams. (BC, Maine, Quinnipiak) and this skill would really help us get out of the zone better) But you do have a point.
also note that later in the schedule we have 13 days off, I think over thanksgiving which is not that far off now. I am really looking forward to seeing the team in person, and I like what jamie said last week, " we are real close". Getting baker back is a plus with his speed. I wonder where he will play.
Any word on Schooley?

Yeah on Friday I thought we were terrible on faceoffs. But on Saturday I am pretty sure we beat Wisconsin on it at least. The Sconie PK didn't look that impressive, they sat back and didn't pressure the puck AT ALL. I would have liked to see more than one PP goal this weekend. Schooley is out for now but maybe with the week off he will be able to come back.

Faceoffs are just so important to the flow of the game and really have an effect on how much time we have the puck. those defensive zone faceoffs with the guys tired just have to be won more often or we are essentially giving away goals. same on the power play, lose the faceoff and lose 30 seconds off the clock without the puck.Like jamie said, it's a game of momentum, and when they have it, nothing takes it away faster than us having possession.
The problem of how we play after gaining a lead is something else too. It's almost like jamie has to teach them how to win.
I really like the progress to date as I think things are a lot better than during the mankato series, but the other teams are getting better as well.
