Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

That's exactly what I thought too. Either bored teens being dumb, or someone who has an interest in shutting down the smelter preservation movement.

Any other town I'd look at the latter, however in this town, the local kids (yes I'm looking at you CTF) don't seem to be the brightest bulbs in the bunch

Personally, I also lean towards the 'bored teen' theory (CC youth have been known to engage in their fair share of vandalism ;)), but I also don't rule out the odd, politically-motivated maniac.

Good thing I got to, um..."investigate" the site before this incident. The police presence will probably double now.

How do you double zero?

Or were you implying that Andy will have to swing out to check on Barney once in a while now? Or was it that Barney will get two bullets instead of just one?

I wouldn't be surprised if it were a young vandal, a maniac, or a Ripley Twp leader seeing that facility as nothing but a drain on their budget for years to come and seeing some incredibly valuable lakefront property on the township rolls. Terrible waste and unfortunate, but after a while you almost have to expect these sorts of events.

Someone lock up Centennial #6 while you're at it, or it'll be next. :(

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

that's a real shame. hope it wasnt arson, but ...

Centennial #3 is being gutted as we speak. not by fire but by the owner who is taking the equipment out and moving it to Arizona. :(

It sucks that it came to this with the smelter, but really, something should have been done with that 30 years ago, before it got into such a dire situation of disrepair that it has been in recently. At this point it the safety hazards at that site had to have been numerous, and also very expensive to fix, if they can be fixed at all. I wish it could be saved, since I love history and historical buildings, but I just don't know if it is possible for the smelter. I also understand the viewpoint of some of the locals, that they don't want to dump a whole bunch of money into it when it is obvious that the area doesn't have a ton of money to throw at projects. :(

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

It was odd, a couple of weeks ago I posted on my facebook "Smoke on the water" because the Portage had this extremely thick and errie fog/cloud over it. And this week it is fire in the sky.

I blame it on me being a Highway Star

Yep. I have always been interested in the mining history of Iron County (grandfather did it his whole life, and I was always interested in it), and it was sad the day the Hiawatha No.1 headframe was torn down for scrap metal (even though it was a National Registered Historic Place).

The Homer-Wasica headframe has also been torn down recently. That was the most modern looking headframe in Iron County. http://www.ironcountyreporter.com/archives/2009/november/11-11-09/article12.htm

My Brother was able to get photos from inside the headframe just a couple months before it was torn down. If anyone's interested, I may post what he e-mailed me later.

What's causing a lot of these mining sites to be gutted is the liability costs. The property owners of any land surrounding the known mine sites are liable for any injuries/death that happens and insurance companies are now refusing to insure property owners of these mine sites unless the buildings are removed.

The last two remaining (known) headframes in Iron County are now the Cardiff mine North of town (with rumors that that ones next to be razzed for scrap metal) and the Pickands-Mather mine headframe which is the showcase piece for the Iron County Museum.

Thanks, tcm.

Really, way more people that I knew from Tech moseyed around the Smelter than kids I went to school with. I've never even been there. Keep in mind, those buildings are slightly jank, and seeing as they had electricity, that very well could also be the cause.
As a fire victim when I was a kid, I know how easily one can start. (a lightbulb in a closet that got left on)

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

I've been getting a bunch of calls from someone claiming to be a banking company in Iron Mountain. I can't make out the name because the lady has a very thick accent. They claim they saw my resume online and want to know if I'm still looking for work.

Oddly enough, the calls aren't coming from the 906 area code. One came from 217 and the other came from 715. Anyone else get a call from these guys?

Haven't gotten a call, no. The 715 would make sense, it's northern Wisconsin, but I haven't a clue why someone from central Illinois would be calling.

I was just in Colorado and one mountain had over 100 head frames at one time. Now most are gone but I'd say about 30 are still there. it's a huge maze down under with one mine going over 3500 ft down.

My house is not completely desireably but it is always an option if you need it. It is the house next to Bethlyn's old 202 qunicy.
