Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Unfortunately we don't have him locked down yet.

True. So, this could be good for us, or very bad for us.

Either he's going to choose Tech and is going to have awesome valuable experience OR he'll get noticed more easily by someone else.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

I doubt he'll wind up at Tech with the attention he's gotten. Especially if his reported 'official visits' to other WCHA schools are true.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

I know a lot of you don't care if we don't recruit locally. But as a lifelong Copper King homer, it's going to seriously Nipissing me off if Johnson doesn't play at Tech. It's happened too many times already. This is where I draw the line with this coaching staff.
Well, either with failing to get Johnson, or show me why we don't need him.

Not even in the SEC can football coaches hold guns to kids heads to make em sign with them. The fans perhaps, but not the coaches.

And I wonder just how big of a dent into the budget it would be to try the old "Hookers and Blow" trick. ;)

Would you commit to Tech after a night with a UP hooker? 'Cause that's about all our athletic department could afford. :p

However, in the same respect, you can only throw so much at him, legally.
Ultimately, Russell and his crew can only go so far, and if Johnson would rather play at a perennial powerhouse, that's that.

When the kid's stock rose as meteorically as it did, you just have to hope that he wants to play for his hometown school, in front of his family every home weekend, and have a shot at being the local star who helped turn the program around. With the way he held out for as long as he did, waiting to see what other offers would come his way, I think it's safe to say that he has no qualms about going away for school/hockey, and playing for a program who will get NCAA tourney exposure every season or nearly every season.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

I get the impression that he's only going to stick around for a year or two at the most at whatever school he chooses.

Is that really what you want at MTU? A distraction that's going to vanish in a year?

(I think) you're getting carried away with this talk. Best player at Cal HS doesn't translate to early-round NHL draft pick.
He wasn't the best player on the ice when Calumet played Brighton.
I think he has a chance to be a good college player, though, and it would be a shame to see him hit the road.
edit: If USNDPT NHL Prospect Ben Johnson hockey superstar Calumet Michigan ever googles this page, he needs to know that we Tech fans really need him to stay home, for truth and justice and the future of our children.

Who said anything about the hooker needing to be a Yooper??? I'm sure they could bring along a few of those temporary face tattoos that could be "strategically placed" on her. ;)

Enter Pat Mikesch to tell the "local boy makes good" story to Johnson. Pat's even been on a team that host home first round playoff games in the WCHA!

I think the Huskies Pep Band should switch from instruments to breathalyzers for Homecoming parade. Might be amusing to see what sort of numbers come up.

What type of number to you have to blow to pull off something like this? (And before you ask, yes, that's an actual photo from the down state FB game last year.)

As far as I know Ben Johnson has an offer from MTU and has had one for some time. IF he doesn't attend MTU it will be a huge loss but as has been stated already. There isn't much we can do about it.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Regarding Johnson, Tech offered first and NMU shortly thereafter. It wasn't until he was taken in the third round of the USHL Futures Draft that bigger schools and the USNDTP started to take notice of a 16 yo Michigan HSer from the UP.

He's not the next Ovechkin, but similar to Kero he is a rare, good local player who would have a chance to do a lot for our program. If Tech doesn't land him, it will be a huge disappointment that will rest heavily on Mikesch's shoulders.

Wasn't that the one where they played Ferris at Fifth/Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids?

Has to be, nobody else in the GLIAC has blue seats.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

That is indeed from the football game at Fifth Third Ballpark

Amazing what you can do with a little propane and an ignition source, there's also a working prototype of a trombone model (quick goes and looks up link for the edit on this post)

Still needs some work, but they're working on making a pretty big flame

Speaking of the pep-band...

It's too bad there aren't any MTU'ers on the Chicago Wolves...

Maybe plan for a game where an alumni is on the opposing team?

According to their website: "Special Wolves gifts: Saturday group leaders receive a free jersey; Free hat for each group member on Saturday games"

Free hat?

FLAMING TRUMPET

I lived with that guy for a few years, and saw him a few times where he wouldn't have needed the propane tank.
