Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

So, the Institution is going to spend money on a new building that will be empty again in a few years?

Too bad there won't be any more illegitimate 1 AM visits to the 5th floor of the EERC. ;)
One of the items on mtu.edu says this:
Michigan Tech has been fortunate to have incredible faculty members over the years. None have been as revered as Myron "Doc" Berry. He helped thousands of Michigan Tech students survive and thrive in his chemistry classes. And he even inspired a tradition of students in the residence halls playing "Another One Bites the Dust" the day of his first, tough freshman exam. The tradition continues today. Share inspirational faculty stories with us.

I thought that tradition was banned?

So, if the museum suppost to be at the Quincy Mine, why not build it over there now instead of dinking around with a halfway house for it??

So that explains the 62-30 drumming of the Timberwolves this weekend. You're going to Madison this weekend right?? ;)

Speaking of which, who is going to be in Houghton this weekend? My budget right now just isn't going to support me going up to Houghton for the GVSU game this year, but I believe Cowboy Eric and a few others will be going up there to take in the game. Its been bit of a tradition to have somebody from the Pep Band to harass Eric, mostly about him putting up the pictures from the games, which he does tend to get lazy about. Whoever wants to do this for me, I'm willing to pay for it, either in Beer or in dinner (for those under 21;)) at the GLI.

Plus, it does have the advantage of cheesing off Dirty because Eric didn't take his picture when we were all up in Grand Forks in 2004.

Something simple like this is what I'm thinking about, but feel free to be creative within the limits of good tastes with it.
Again kids, free beer at the Joe for somebody who wants to do this for me. Not like I'm going to ask for ID. ;)

the museum is problematic. the EERC desperately needs the space. the Quincy buildings have been stabilized but they don't have the funding to finish. the smaller museum will get the museum out of the EERC, with better visibilty, parking, easier to find, new displays, etc. and will be re utilized when the museum moves to its ultimate home.

You are correct. RA's are supposed to write you up for harassment or something.
It's like the NFL selling videos for hard hits...promoting something that is banned by school policy...yay! great message by the institution.

It is problematic, and I think the biggest problem is that there's no money in the federal or state budgets for the Quincy Mine location of the Keweenaw National Historic Park. The recent smelter fire proved that the National Park Service can't give financial support for most of these projects (which would have paid for upkeep and a proper fire suppression system), so I'm guessing The Institution looked at the options and said, "We'll put it on Sharon for now, and if the NPS ever gets off its arse, we'll move it across the way and put class space in the interim museum."

There was talk of making the space business incubator space for Tech once the museum moved out. Pretending that this is a good thing and that the SmartZone is fighting for space as it is. They have four buildings, and I doubt they are at capacity.

What really ticks me off is that this new waste of money is being built on four holes of MTU Disc Golf course. I went up there to play the other day to escape the lab for a bit, and they had put **** construction equipment on holes 1,2,8, and 9. Another wonderful present from The Institution. Anybody hear if they are going to redesign the course for next year?

Tech gets all giddy and excited like a horny NMU co-ed everytime someone gives them a little bit of money. They get all wet over the idea of building new buildings, whether it is well planned or not (a temporary home, then wasted space doesn't seem like a good idea to me). It seems to me that there is likely already an exsisting structure somewhere that could serve as the museum's temporary home, instead of building new. But, someone gives them a donation, and they go all orgasmic over the idea of designing a new building.

Speaking of which, are the dorms and appartment building at capacity now? There was great outcry that there was not enough room in these areas. ::sarcasm::

I think that there should be some merciless public mocking of The Institution at some point. I would be amused.

Hey, maybe they can convert it into an indoor paintball course once the museum finally moves (which I predict will take 10 years), and Dirty can come picket it. :D

Maybe they can demolish Lot 10 and put in a giant storage shed. I think that is what we need right now.

For all the Techies, we have a game used Tyler Shelast jersey up for auction. The money is befitting UMD's equipment manager who is sick and is under treatment. There are many other jersey's up for grabs, too.

Also, why the hell isn't Tech putting something like this together for our equipment manager Roy Britz, who is recovering from cancer treatment?

People actually used the frisbee golf course?

Building a new building is good, especially when it comes from donations. Settle down people. Do you people actually think that in 10 years there won't be a need for more office space or research space? Schools always want to do more research, it brings them money and prestige, gaining more space to do research is not a bad thing.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Tech's funding for the museum dried up - both from the government and from private donations - when the recession hit. the interim museum is being privately funded and it is desperately needed. the EERC thing was a "temporary" move - what? - 30 years ago.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Notes from Jamie on todays Huskies Drive Time:

- Dirk -"Has all that jet leg rubbed off yet?"
- Not quite, He was up at 3:30 this morning so still adjusting after being overseas doing some recruiting
- We've gotten off to a great start, but we're going into a tough place to play
- We have a young lineup, time to prove we are a consistent hockey team
- We're excited, needed a break after all of the games
- We were not sharp in Madison last year, very injured, they were the best hockey team we played last year
- Team had Sun/Mon off last week, tried to heal up some bumps/bruises, worked on PP & PK
- We made some adjustments specifically for Wisc. series
- Want to improve on us giving up odd man rushes

On lineup:
- Happy with our lineup, no major changes, but there will still be changes
- Anthony Shcooley and Baker are still out with injuries, Dirk said something about Schooley still being injured and will be out for awhile
- Want ice time to be competative and earned by the players
- Genoe will start Friday
- Josh didn't have a good outing against Mankato, Genoe came in and got us the tie

On Wisc.
- Jamie hasn't seen any film on Wisc yet, assistants did alot of film work while Jamie was gone
- They are talented, lost a lot through grad. and NHL signings
- they always do a good job on PP/PK

-Need to make sure we get pucks on net during PP, big ice will change what we do on our PK
