Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

There is a difference; I'm not going to explain.

Translated:

I used corporate business euphamisms to change the wording to my advantage, even though there is no real difference in how you state it.

Cost savings means it was too expensive. Try again, home-schooler.

jsr, I think you have been caught with your pants down. just zip up the zipper and go on. There are plusses and minuses to the big ice, as everyone knows.

Ah yes, those Yooper "family ties" ... ;)

HOUGHTON - There's no other place that Michigan Tech hockey recruit Blake Hietala should be.

Hietala grew up in the Huskies' backyard. He cheered for Tech as a kid.

He had an uncle (Ryan Markham) who played for the Huskies. And he'll get a chance to play with his cousin (Tanner Kero) next year.

I bet we been together for a million years,
And I bet we'll be together for a million more.

Oh, It's like I started breathing on the night we kissed,
And I can't remember what I ever did before.

What would we do baby, Without Us?
What would we do baby, Without Us?

And there ain't no nothing we can't love each other through.

What would we do baby, Without Us?

Sha la la la.

In other news...I'm so glad we beat out UConn, AIC and Army for this kid ;)

Where the hell is the NMU/LSSU game thread?

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Nah, they're always like this. Even a few years ago when we were winning some games, they pretty much refused to acknowledge that it was anything but a fluke.

Pretty much because it was a fluke...

Reputation is a powerful thing. It is also not an instantaneous quality. 20 years of losing is very hard to erase, even if you string together a few wins (early 2006-07). You see it in the local's opinions of the team, you see it in the students that have been here for a while. When the culture is losing, it takes a long time to break that cycle, even when the results aren't losses (again, 2006-07 and a little bit the following year).

If Tech were to start winning early this season, it would likely be towards Winter Carnival by the time people started to notice that things are different in Houghton. Attendance would start to go up, but it wouldn't happen overnight. Tech would start to get national recognition, but it would take a few weeks.

And then next year, no matter what Tech does this year, they will be back towards the bottom of the rankings. A good season is a fluke when the history suggests that the team sucks. That is why you see teams that are highly overrated based on the history (look at Michigan football right now. No Top 25 team could possibly have that defense. But it is Michigan, one of the football blue bloods, so they get the benefit of the doubt), or not taken seriously until they prove they can do it consistently.

A successful season by Tech would be to finish 7th or better in this conference. And nobody is going to notice the 7th place WCHA team. The teams we play might respect us a bit more for being competitive, but anyone outside of our circle and in the media would not even notice a difference. We would still be considered the "perennial doormats".
------

I am facing a tough decision tomorrow. I am going to be in Marquette anyway. However, I do not want to pay $15 to go to the hockey game. I especially don't want to pay for a ticket that gives money directly to the NMU athletic department. That would be like supporting those **********s (even just a drop in their bucket), and I really hope they just go broke and die. I wish them nothing but despair, plague, losing, and herpes.

(I would laugh if NMU didn't have enough money and had to make tough cuts, like cutting football. I doubt their alumni would save the team.)

But I digress... support my team by giving the enemy money?

That fails to explain Yale suddenly being a Top 10 team. I know they were tops in the ECAC last year, but still...

Look, I get that success breeds respect. You don't have to tell me that. I'm just saying, the InCH crew has a history of playing favorites and ripping on teams that they've been ragging on for years.

BIG DISCLAIMER I AM DRUNK AND ANYTHING I SAY THE FACTS SHOULD BE CHECKED ON CAUSE IM TOO LAZY

Until Holmberg gets used to the NHL sheet, he may enjoy the bigger ice on some of our roadtrips this year. NMU, Wisconsin, St. Cloud, Anchorage, and Minnesota all have an Olympic or near-Olympic size sheet.

WI isnt a Olympic size sheet. slightly smaller, see disclaimer. at least thats according to Shepard. cause he couldnt see the boards through the fog

That's why I included "near-Olympic size" (WI is 200x97, I believe).

Go get another drink. ;) :D

Yale is a Top 10 team on INCH because they are a known Ivy-league school. They are there based on name. Remember, INCH is an ESPN affiliate, and that says all you need to know about their hockey coverage, especially at the collegiate ranks. Also, they have had two 20+ win seasons in a row, and two trips to the NCAA tournament. They may have had a losing culture before, but they are passed the point of earning respect and changing the culture of the program. (Also note, they are #6 on USCHO too)

And to be honest, Michigan Tech deserves all the ragging it gets. When you post less than 10 wins in 9 out of 12 years, there is no requirement for respect. Our coach is entering his 8th year, and averages a record of 9 wins, 24 losses, and 5 ties.

We are past the point of this being a 'make or break' year for Michigan Tech. There is nothing to break anymore. We haven't shown the ability to really make anything, at least consistently. We haven't been to the NCAA tournament in 29 years, we haven't had home ice for the playoffs in a long time. We can't even put together 2 games and win our own freaking four team tournament in Detroit in 30 years. There is nothing left to tarnish.

When Jamie was hired, it was "wait until he gets his system established" and "wait until he gets the right assistants in place" and "wait until we get to the point where all the players are his recruits". We are passed that point. Eight years is a long honeymoon in Houghton, and the seat has to be getting a little bit warm.

I have been patient and waited to see the results from sticking with a coach and getting consistency in the program. Well, consistency has been achieved (8 years is a long time span for a coach nowadays). The time has come to see results or move on.

It is time to change the culture of Michigan Tech hockey. If we can do that with this coaching staff in place, then we shall see the benefits. If an assistant coach and a new class of recruits can make the difference *this time around*, then hopefully we will see the dividends.

If not, well, I will still stand behind this team. GO HUSKIES!

(Edit: I support Jamie Russell as coach of the Michigan Tech Huskies, and have faith that he will turn the program around this year (or at least a hope he will). I predict 15 wins. How much of this is blind faith? I honestly don't know)

Finally!.......HOCKEY DAY!!

GO HUSKIES!!!!
AMEN!!!!.

I agree with the fact that Tech has a bad rep and it takes a long, long time to overcome it. It's a lot harder to turn things around these days than maybe 1980.. But I also agree that inch is out of line. I would bet they have never once seen Tech play. not even at Gli, (well except maybe last year's debacle which they most likely saw)

15 wins is a big jump. I hope it comes true. Three wins in the next 5 days, and 4 wins in 8 days, would be a real good start. I like our schedule, and I think it can be done, but we have to continue to get better. Based on the exhibition opener we have a ways to go but the difference between winning and losing is small. We have to find a way to get over the hump and not look back.

Yes. Even if you bought them through the MTU box-office earlier, that money still goes to NMU.

It's sort of two-fold. If, by you and everyone else, not purchasing tickets DID cause the hockey team to fold, you lose one location just an hour and a half away to watch your team.

Also lost is the morale and support you may have given the team by showing your teams colors in the opponents barn.

Absolutely support your team through local opposing teams. Unless you can find ways to get onto the Comp Tickets that are given to players each weekend... ;)
