Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Notes from Jamie being on Huskies Drive Time today-

Tuesday 10/12 against NMU is a white out - first 400 fans get a white Tech shirt

On the game against Ni****ing:
- We didn't take our foot off the gas in terms of work ethic or competitiveness in the 2nd and 3rd
- very happy with 1st period, good jump, made plays and good decisions
- In the 2nd and 3rd we tried to be too creative when the opportunity wasn't there
- we want our players to be creative, especially our forwards
- Ni****ing clogs the middle of the ice, and we had way too many turnovers

On several freshman goals on Saturday:
- Hope freshman can come in and make an impact
- Ryan Furne is playing on 2nd line already
- Jamie told a story last week in practice regarding Furne's work ethic, conditions test showed Jamie that he didn't think Ryan could play 2nd line mins, PP and PK, but Ryan's been working on his fitness and wanted to redo the conditions test right after practice that day
- Holmberg hasn't played on an NHL size sheet and will need to get used to it
- On his goal, he did a great job of driving to the net

On NMU, and their win 11-0 over Ni****ing:
- They have some talented players
- They lost three good players over the offseason
- Tech knocked three players out of Ni****ing's lineup and they went to Marquette shorthanded

ON goalie situation, Dirk said Jamie had stated he plans to start with rotating goalies:
- Josh will start against NMU on Friday
- Will make a definite decision for Saturday after that

Dirk and Jamie discussed the 2nd line:
- Dressed 13 forwards against Ni****ing
- 2nd line is Furne, Kattelus and it was a mix of Rix, Johnstone and McLeod
- So far, impressed with Jacob Johnstone as a freshman
- Eventually once he's back, would like to get Jordan Baker on 2nd line and get a little bit more speed on that line

On captains situstion:
- Little different having co-captains, has worked extremely well
- They have different leadership styles
- Have respect of their teammates

On 3 games in 4 nights and then hockey the following weekend:
- A lot of hockey
- Not concerned, had no travel yet and it's early in the season
- Will use a variety of people, because we're healthy right now except Jordan Baker

On LSSU:
- recently we've had great games with LSSU
- They're a very disciplined team
- They haven't had too much firepower, but good on specialty teams and goaltending
- we need to make good decisions

It's great to see a couple freshmen competing for large amounts of ice time, but I think this team really needs Jordan Baker to get healthy ASAP, come back into the lineup, and have a good senior season.

SG - That would be my guess, unless Russell was unimpressed with one of the wingers during the exhibition game.

Anyone know when Baker is suppose to be back, I thought I heard by the Northern games, but that doesn't sound like the case now the way Russell is talking

Baker is skating but won't be back for Northern/LSSU/Northern games.

didn't he win "Wildcat Slayer"? we could use him out there.

Until Holmberg gets used to the NHL sheet, he may enjoy the bigger ice on some of our roadtrips this year. NMU, Wisconsin, St. Cloud, Anchorage, and Minnesota all have an Olympic or near-Olympic size sheet.

Olympic size is actually now NHL size (most recent and next Olympic games). These rinks should now be referred to as oversize. Very humorous that numerous college teams put in oversize sheets as it was considered the wave of the future and now the Olympics are using NHL size. NHL size is much quicker and more exciting game to watch, and the reason they are switching the Olympics to it; along with the fact that most Olympic players are NHL players.

No, the Olympics switched to NHL size because it was too expensive to retrofit GM Place for Olympic size for the Vancouver games...

It wasn't too expensive; it was just cost savings. If it was critical to have an oversize sheet they would have spent the money. It wasn't important so they didn't do it; I don't believe I heard anyone mentioning *'s by Canadas gold because it was played on NHL size sheet. I can't find the quote but I recall the Olympic committee commenting after that it made for exciting games and it was likely the next olympics would use nhl size as well.

I don't think anyone except the Euro teams would disagree that as long as blatant obstruction is called, the smaller ice sheet is better for the game. The big sheet takes away a lot of the physical/checking aspect of hockey that everyone except Gary Bettman and Sweden likes.

Re: "Next Year" Begins Now: Michigan Tech 2010-11 Season Thread Part I

Uhhhhh........

There is a difference; I'm not going to explain.

Also here is IIHF Rene Fasels quote I referred to regarding NHL size sheet:

August 24, NHL.com: IIHF President Rene Fasel was bowled over by the Vancouver 2010 Olympics it seems. Vancouver was best-ever tournament for me," Fasel said Tuesday during a formal Q and A session at the World Hockey Summit. "It was just incredible."

In fact, the best-on-best national team tournament, featuring NHL players for the third-straight Olympiad, was so good that it changed Fasel's opinion about the small ice surface, which was used in Vancouver. Generally, Olympic hockey tournaments are contested on the larger ice surface prevalent throughout Europe, but the 2010 Games were played on the 200 by 85 sheet used by the NHL's Vancouver Canucks.

"After the Vancouver Games I will tell you I like the small ice very much," he said. "What I saw was that the intensity of the games, for the hockey fan, was just incredible.":

If everyone agrees they're better for the game, why did all these colleges put in oversize sheets in their new buildings????

It appears to me there is a lot of disagreement when the WCHA is (was) 50/50.

Also have you heard of or watched Kronwall, Forsberg, Franzen, Holmstrom ......... Just wondering. Also Zetterberg; he's afraid to go in the corners as well.

Because IIRC the NCAA says the ice sheet should be as close to 200x100 as possible...

Oh yeah, not all Swedes are like that. Kronwall's a good example of a guy who will deliver the crushing hit if presented with the opportunity. Holmstrom has made a career out of taking beatings front of the net. But these guys have played in the NHL for awhile now and quickly figured out what it would take to stay over here and make the big bucks. Unless you're a top-notch scorer, you're expected to finish your checks and stop whining. Not all of them figure that out.
