Don't have the numbers, but going on what I remember about the games, the powerplay over in Europe was probably at least as good as the end of last season.

Ian sucks :p He did a really good job of noting the stats in the game summaries for the first 3ish games and then nothing definitive.

1st 3 European games
PP: 1/6 - 16.7%
PK: 4+/4+ - 100%

We scored three PPG in the Vienna game, and one in the Klagenfurt game, but I don't know exactly how many opportunities we had in those final two games. Even still, 5/15~20 would be pretty solid. As for the PK, Vienna and Klagenfurt had 2-3 PPG on us between them.

I wouldn't read too much into these preseason stats, but I think our special teams will be alright if we stay healthy. Everything hinges on that.

What is that word? Right there, yeah that one....

I'm unsure of the meaning of that word....therefore it must not exist

I do not quite subscribe to this. Healthy is of course good, but it is too easy to blame our failings on the fact that we were hurt. The fact was our top forwards at times in every game, dogged it and didn't do their job at least part of the time. Resulting in turnovers. We simply can't continue to turn the puck over in the neutral zone so much. It is just almost suicide.
Our defensemen, all of them, were collectively bad. Not head-manning the puck, not giving the goal-tenders a good look, not moving the puck out of the zone promptly, and often were generally out of position or if they were in position, not being aggressive enough in front and letting other teams roam at will in the slot. Not to mention the failings of the goaltending.
This is a lot of holes to fill. However, if the young guys from last year who generally were not to be counted on, can up their game as it appears they have, and if the goaltending is better, we will be a lot better and teams will no longer take us for granted.

BTW, BC pp runs at over 20% consistently. We need to be in the low 20's in my opinion and suddenly we will find teams treating us differently. Right now they know that even if they do commit some infraction and it is called they most likely will escape intact. So they hold and grab in front and do stuff that really does impact our ability to score/defend/ counterattack.
There was a whole lot away from the puck that the opposition got away with last year, and which caused me at times to have apoplexy over the non calls. It's imperative we make them pay for their aggressiveness on the scoreboard. similar to the Red Wings. .
Watching the top teams, and this is not in the WCHA generally, they are real good at puck movement, and this causes someone to be eventually out of position which gives them an opportunity.

I'm not sure how much stock we can put in the Europe PK/PP stats because the graduating seniors were there and the freshmen weren't.

We have a larger Freshman class, 8 not counting Gordic, and overall we are pretty young with 18/28 roster spots being underclassmen. It could be a struggle this year. But I do agree we need to hope that the Tech special teams can continue the progress they made towards the end of last year. That will be huge in deciding how we start the season.

Two things that explain watching Tech hockey. Bacon and watching things fail.

INCH did their yearly A-Z, highlighting a player from every team. This was a couple weeks ago but I saw it today for the first time, they highlighted Steven Seigo.

INCH A-Z: Steven Seigo
By Jess Myers
STEVEN SEIGO
Michigan Tech
So. | D | Edenwold, Saskatchewan

Key Statistics: With 19 points as a rookie – including three assists in his collegiate debut, a 5-3 win over Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan – Seigo finished second offensively among freshman defensemen in the WCHA. He shared the Huskies’ team award for outstanding rookie with goaltender Kevin Genoe.

What He Does: For a guy stationed on the blue line, Seigo does a lot of puck moving and admits that he likes to play the “fourth forward” role when it’s smart for him to do so. His coaches were obviously comfortable with Seigo in that role right away, putting him on the Huskies top man-advantage unit from the start of his freshman year. Seigo says proving to his teammates that he deserved that spot was nerve-wracking experience. A trio of assists in his first career game must have cooled any doubts that fellow Huskies harbored. Coach Jamie Russell says Seigo should be prepared for an even bigger role this season.

The Bigger Picture: Michigan Tech’s trip to Germany and Austria last month was just the latest bit of exercise Seigo’s much-used passport has gotten in search of hockey knowledge and skill development. Before reporting to Houghton, he spent part of the summer of 2009 in the Czech Republic skating against European professionals, then went to Sweden to play on a team of North Americans there to scrimmage the Swedish national U-18 team during tryouts. Russell says you can see in Seigo’s game that he’s been exposed to many different hockey philosophies and puts that knowledge to good use. Since the Huskies open the 2010-11 season having already played a handful of games overseas (albeit without their incoming freshmen) there’s a quiet confidence that improvement on last season’s 5-30-1 mark is coming.

“From what we accomplished in Europe, the team definitely feels stronger,” Seigo said. “I think we’re going to be better. We have to be better.”

Huskies coach Jamie Russell on Seigo: “We threw him right into the fire, running our first power-play unit. Offensively he’s a special player and he makes very good decisions as a defenseman, so we feel like we’re just scratching the surface with Steven.”

Yeah, I saw that a few days after it came out. When they kicked that ongoing column off, I figured they would pick him.

While I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the Europe PK/PP stats, you can't completely ignore them either. Pietila, Kattelus, Olson, Gordic, and Seigo were all a significant part of the powerplay over there. I'm pretty sure that Kivisto was the only graduating senior who saw a lot of PK time.

If someone wants to kill jsr, I'll give them an alibi and say they were hanging out with me at the dt.

The alleged suspect is actually visiting Chez Rube, on a scouting expedition for the F4. ;)
