I agree that is isn't a formality, but I think there is a much greater chance of A-Rod being around well into his 40's (as long as he still has power) and getting 763 than Jeter playing into his 40's and getting 4000. As they both age into their 40's I see a much greater need for a power hitting part time 3B/SS/DH than an average hitter (lead off type) part time SS/DH.
I tend to agree, but it took Rodriguez exactly 3 years to get from 500 to 600. Granted, there's an injury in there, too, but you've got to figure that there's going to be higher probability of that now that he's on the other side of 35. If it takes him 3 more years to get to 700, now he's 38 and still a couple years short. And at that point, it's nowhere near a formality that he gets #763.
