Though one thing in favor of older material is the sifting of time. If 90% of everything is dung, the 10% from the old days survives while in any period we have to wade through all of the contemporary stuff, unfiltered. Friends of mine from the UK assure me that British TV is as bad or worse than US TV; the reason it looks so good is we only get the very best of it imported.
Saw "Our Idiot Brother" today. Way, way better than it had any right to be -- genuinely well-written and the first well-acted movie I've seen in about a decade.
No, crap is still crap. There's a reason why the movies of the 20's through 50's are considered great while the movies of the 60's through the 90's are considered garbage.

Seems like a talented and charming enough cast to be able to get by on a mediocre script. It'll certainly be a Redbox movie in the EoDS household.

I call it the Saturday Night Live factor - everyone thinks contemporary SNL sucks because the only old stuff from the show they see are the classics. The trash doesn't get re-aired.
I also disagree with your assertion that the 60's-90's are considered junk. The 70's alone gave us Star Wars, The Godfather 1 & 2, Jaws, Rocky, Chinatown, The Sting, Alien, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc.

All good movies. But then again, nine for an entire decade. There were probably nine great movies made in the first three months of every year in the 40's.
Chinatown was an interesting choice, too, since it was a deliberate (and very successful) attempt to recreate a 50's film noir.
This is arguing about taste, but generally speaking development of technology usually makes things more direct and less imaginative. When a director can't do something technologically he has to hint at it. Hinting gives the audience an active participatory role. Once he can just show you, he has closed off avenues of audience imagination.

Hey now. There are some great Woody Allen movies.
But I take your point: there are a lot of mediocre movies on that list (if "The Towering Inferno" is on a decade's list of 100 greatest movies, that's a craptacular decade).
Also, European movies follow different rules of decades (for instance, while 20s and 30s European movies are great, the 40s is a lost decade (obviously) and the 50's is pretty bad except in England and France. OTOH, 60's and even early 70's European movies are fantastic -- a match for 50's American movies. The rot didn't really set in for Europe until the mid 80's.
Also, "art movies" (Amarcord, etc) are just a whole other story. They're a genre like westerns, so they have to be judged against each other -- chances are if you hate one you hate them all (cough chick flicks cough). Roger Ebert writes a lot about rating movies against "what they are trying to do." So for example "Evil Dead" is a great horror movie, "Stagecoach" is a great western, but it's just not possible to rate them against each other -- they're doing different things.

I don't like his "so precious they crap sugar" love letters to the upper west side like Annie Hall and Manhattan, and some of his screwball comedies are dated and/or tiresome, but Take the Money and Run, The Front, Zelig, and Broadway Danny Rose are all great movies.Further proving your definition of "good" sucks

Realized I had some movies on my DVR that I hadn't watched, so I started Friday night with Citizen Kane. Fantastic film; Orson Welles was a genius. I especially noticed how the lighting on Kane transitioned from light to dark as he went from a good guy to the lonely, miserable jerk living his last days.
Next in the queue: Strange Brew, followed by Donnie Darko, Mallrats, Spirited Away, and Canadian Bacon.

Finally saw "The Untouchables." Yeah, I know, but I have a serious disdain for Costner, and anything he does.

Overall: pretty good. Obviously you have to accept all the inaccuracies, but it was still entertaining.

The Lincoln Lawyer: very entertaining with some good twists and turns makes it a movie I would recommend for a rental. Quite a few faces I recognized in the movie as it seems they used fairly established actors for even some of the lesser roles. William H Macy is a good example.
