Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Replace Role Models with Knocked Up. Also Step Brothers was decent in a goofy way.

No I was talking about movies not with Apatow attached...and Knocked up was ok but not nearly as funny as Role Models. Knocked Up let jokes and bits hang too long which killed the momentum pretty much everytime the movie was getting good. If it had been about 20 minutes shorter I would give it better marks. Plus Kathrine Heigl isnt even in the same league as Elizabeth Banks.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Honest question: what did people like about Knocked Up? I thought it was the poster child for unfunny, predictable formula movie.

Except for Katherine Heigl, not much.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

The impetus for my original comment was that I felt like Couples Retreat was being sold as a a film like Apatow's best. In reality it contained no character development and no real conflict. This is clear from the "I just want to be with my family" message of the movie's finale. Bottom line is that it just didn't work.

Much agreed. Like Four Christmases, the cost of admission was not worth the two or three vintage Vince lines. Not to mention, for being set in the tropics, hot babes were serious lacking. Seeing Sarah Marshall's hip bones did nothing for me.

Skip it and save it for a semi-comatose Sunday evening rental.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

They showed a preview for the next Twilight movie. The audience was not interested.

Thankfully I date the one girl under 30 who doesn't want to be a vampire. The audience at Couples Retreat was really mixed over this preview. The younger girls were looking left and right at their boys to see if it was exciting enough to con them into going. The older people had no love.

Anyone else catch the trailer for Sherlock Holmes? I'm not sure I can trust that this will be any good. It's the second time I've seen it in a couple of weeks (The Informant), and I'm not convinced...

Also, I'm glad that Couples Retreat spared us the 2012 preview. This movie makes me hope that the Mayan calendar does predict the end of the world, so that I'll perish knowing I'll never have to waste any of my life on movies like that.

I have seen the Sherlock Holmes trailer a few times and I have the same feeling as you. I just don't buy the idea of Sherlock Holmes as an action star fighting bad guys and jumping around quipping one-liners like it is a Die Hard movie. I am sure it will make uber cash though so it wont matter anyways.

2012 I think visually looks cool (watching LA fall apart is awesome) but the movie itself is going to suck hard. The only question is, if John Cusack saves the world how does Jeremy Piven play into the movie? :D

I saw the preview for Legion and for some reason I am somewhat intrigued...I am sure that will change but I enjoyed the preview a lot.

It had good writing and I liked the development, not much more to describe it other than that, it was Apatow writing guys as guys, which is his strength.

c.f., "Shakespeare in Love."

If they give Holmes a love interest I'm torching the theater. One of the great things about the character is he is utterly bereft of sexuality.

Maybe they'll cast Rachel Weisz or Angelina Jolie as Watson ... ;)

Something tells me they won't delve into his love for the needle as another means of ignoring the true character.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Is it really so bad for someone to make a different interpretation of the character that focuses on different aspects?

No but there is a change of focus and a change of character and nothing I have seen in the preview (which is obviously just a small slice of the movie) makes me think I am watching a movie about Sherlock Holmes minus the accent and his barbs with Watson.

Hey it could be great, I mean the Bourne movies only had the names of some characters to tie them to the books and I enjoyed them a lot. V for Vendetta while similar in tone once again was a huge departure from the book but I still enjoyed it. Of course Jason Bourne and V aren't exactly on the same level as Sherlock Holmes. ;) This could be like them, or it could be like Starship Troopers which was a friggin joke. I don't think there is anything wrong with being concerned that one of the greatest characters in all of literature might look foolish in this forthcoming movie.

There's a point when a character has been done so many different ways that no single portrayal makes a difference, and Holmes is past that point. We've had Holmes as genius, madman, aristo, junkie, queer, fool, and teen. Heartthrob was probably inevitable. Worse atrocities have been committed.
