Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

edit: Bill is dead so why does he need to be killed exactly?

Because David Carradine was the consumate professional. No matter what the role, he showed up and did his work. He tightened his belt and came, and that's what we can expect for Kill Bill Vol 3.

Thank you, Comedy Central Roasts.

Wow

Gran Turino:

I can't say I walked away from this totally blown away. But I can say that from beginning to end (minus one small clip**) it was a dam solid movie. Since it was shot in the Midwest, those of us who live here can pick up the nuances of the neighborhoods/values/whatever you want to call it. If you discard the blatant racism in the movie, I bet I know a crapton of people like Eastwood's character.

As for Eastwood's family in the movie? * them. I'd smack that beech granddaughter of his for lack of respect. Same with his grandsons. And his sons.

Just in case, spoiler below, whited out.

**I hate how movies have to make it obvious that a parallel has occurred, most often involving Jesus/crucifixion/sacrifice. When Walt died, he ended up in the Jesus On The Cross Position. Uh, dude. I GET IT. It takes away some of the power/momentum/emotion of the scene.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

I think you are thinking too much about stuff, I didnt even notice what you are referencing and it certainly doesn't knock you over the head with parallel. If that bugs you you must really hate movies like Cool Hand Luke.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Saw "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" last night for the first time. It's great (and now I know that "I will always love you" was actually done well once).

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

There Will Be Blood:

It was decent. Daniel Day-Lewis was awesome, as usual. The kid who played the preacher was really good. You really wanted to smack him around at times. I thought the movie was a little longer than it needed to be, I think a couple scenes/shots coulda been trimmed from anywhere from a few seconds to a couple minutes. I don't mind long movies, but I do mind long movies that needlessly drag at points, and this was one of them.

It was a good story, great character development, and some "look in the mirror" moments, which I really enjoy dramas and such. I did think that the first half of the movie was more detailed than it had to be, while the second half could have been more detailed. Wished that there was a little more balance.

Worth seeing, but dunno about repeat viewing (as in something you watch more than a few times; worth seeing once or twice more, to catch anything you might have missed before).

Zombieland is pretty funny.

I loved it! I am sick to death of Zombies and I thought this movie did a great job of mocking them! Plus the cameo put it over the top! :D

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Tried watching King of Beggars. It was terrible.

Very disappointed in it. Stephen Chow has come a long way since making that terrible movie.

Also white subtitles? Are you guys nuts?

The best part about that movie was how **** hilariously funny it was. Definitely unexpected.

Couples Retreat: You're probably thinking that all the funny parts of the movie are in the preview. You're right. The Globe's reviewer put it best: if you want to see a movie set on a beach with Kristen Bell, then rent Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This one tries to be one of those Apatow type movies but doesn't quite get it done.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Re: Couples Retreat:

From all that I've heard, it's your average Saturday Afternoon Killer movie. If you take it as a silly dumbed down comedy, you'll like it. If you expect anything like the Apatow movies etc, you'll be disappointed.

I'll probably end up watching it, as the previews seem to say that Vaughn just kinda goes off (where I think he's at his best: see Wedding Crashers, Swingers) instead of held back (see: Dodgeball).

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

You say this like it is a bad thing...Apatow is vastly overrated and has been for a while.

He's no comedic genius, but he's made some dam funny movies (and has succeeded in injecting sentimental stuff/humanity in them, which is tough). Better than a lot of the schlock that passes off as a "great comedy" nowadays. Like Couples Retreat. ;)

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

No his name is attached to a lot of funny movies but most of his stuff stinks. For every 40 Year Old Virgin and Forgetting Sarah Marshall there is a Drillbit Taylor, Funny People, Step Brothers and Year One.

Put it this way Role Models and I Love You Man >>>>>> anything Apatow has done since 40 Year Old Virgin including Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I loved :) (which he neither wrote or directed anyways which is probably why it didn't blow goats ;) )

When you have movies like Blart Mall Cop or whatever, 17 again (gee, another Freaky Friday ripoff?), Night At The Museum (or for that matter, most Stiller movies), You Don't Mess With The Zohan, etc being "big" comedies......that's just terrible. That's what I'm saying. :)

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

Replace Role Models with Knocked Up. Also Step Brothers was decent in a goofy way.

I have to admit that Knocked Up was better (in a different way) than I thought it would be. I didn't expect that much sentimentality/humanity/emotion in it. It delivered, that's for sure.

Re: new/rented movies: DEVASTATOR!!!!!

We watched Young People ********** "YPF" over the weekend. Pretty good overall, and some very interesting, and funny, observations on sex and human relationships.
